403. לָמַדְנוּ, מַה שֶּׁכָּתוּב (בראשית ג) וְאֵיבָה אָשִׁית בֵּינְךָ וּבֵין הָאִשָּׁה, אַרְבָּעָה וְעֶשְׂרִים מִינֵי טֻמְאָה הִטִּיל הַנָּחָשׁ בַּנְּקֵבָה כְּשֶׁהִתְחַבֵּר עִמָּהּ, כְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן וְאֵיבָה, וְעֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבָּעָה מִינִים (דִּינִים) מִתְעוֹרְרִים לְמַעְלָה, וְעֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבָּעָה לְמַטָּה. וְשֵׂעָר גָּדוֹל וְצִפָּרְנַיִם גְּדוֹלוֹת, וְאָז מִתְעוֹרְרִים הַדִּינִים בַּכֹּל. וְלָמַדְנוּ, כְּשֶׁרוֹצָה אִשָּׁה לְהִטָּהֵר, צְרִיכָה לְסַפֵּר אוֹתוֹ שֵׂעָר שֶׁגָּדַל בַּיּוֹם שֶׁהִיא טְמֵאָה, וּלְסַפֵּר אֶת צִפָּרְנֶיהָ, וְכָל אוֹתָהּ זֻהֲמָה שֶׁבָּהֶן.
404. שֶׁלָּמַדְנוּ בְּסוֹדוֹת הַטֻּמְאָה, שֶׁזֻּהֲמַת הַצִּפָּרְנַיִם מְעוֹרֶרֶת זֻהֲמָה אַחֶרֶת, וּמִשּׁוּם כָּךְ צְרִיכִים גְּנִיזָה, וּמִי שֶׁמַּעֲבִירָם לְגַמְרֵי, כְּאִלּוּ הֵעִיר חֶסֶד בָּעוֹלָם. שֶׁלָּמַדְנוּ, אֵין צָרִיךְ אָדָם לָתֵת זֵכֶר לְמִינִים רָעִים. שֶׁשָּׁנִינוּ, אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשָּׁה מִינִים רָעִים נֶאֱחָזִים בְּאוֹתָהּ הַזֻּהֲמָה שֶׁהִטִּיל הַנָּחָשׁ הֶחָזָק, וְכֻלָּם מִתְעוֹרְרִים בְּאוֹתָהּ זֻהֲמַת הַצִּפָּרְנַיִם.

We have learned regarding what is written: “וְאֵיבָה אָשִׁית בֵּינְךָ וּבֵין הָאִשָּׁה” “And I will place enmity between you and the woman” (Genesis 3:15). The Snake injected 24 types of impurity into the Nukva when it became intertwined with her — corresponding to the numerical value of the word “ואיבה” (“enmity”), which equals 24. And 24 [types] are awakened above and 24 below. And the hair grows, and the nails grow, and then judgments are aroused in the world. And we have learned: When the woman wishes to purify herself, she must cut the measure of hair that grew during the days of her impurity and trim her nails, and all that defilement within them must be removed.
Notes:
The Zohar recommends removing hair that grows during periods of impurity to allow for spiritual and mental purification.
Halacha does not require shaving the entire head, but it does discuss the need to ensure that immersion in a mikveh is without a barrier – including hair.

We have learned in the secrets of impurity that the defilement found in fingernails awakens another defilement — that is, the defilement of the Sbake. For this reason, one must bury the nail clippings. And whoever destroys them completely — meaning he burns them — it is as if he awakens Chessed in the world. We have learned that a person should not leave any remembrance of the evil forces. We have learned that 1,405 evil species are grasped by that defilement cast by the powerful Snake, and the impurity of the fingernails awakens all of them.
Notes:
Fingernails carry spiritual impurity that stems from the defilement introduced by the primordial Snake. Mishandling nail clippings — especially leaving them exposed — activates deep-rooted, destructive spiritual forces, including 1,405 categories of evil. To counteract this, nails must be properly disposed of, ideally burned, to not only prevent harm but to awaken Chessed in the world. This practice reflects the broader cosmic battle between holiness and impurity, with even small physical actions impacting higher spiritual realms.
