Zohar Beresheet

#262
And if they repent, it is said about them: “וַיּוֹרֵהוּ ה’ עֵץ וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ אֶל הַמַּיִם וַיִּמְתְּקוּ הַמָּיִם” “And HaShem showed him a tree” (Exodus 15:25) — this is the Tree of Life — “And he cast it into the waters, and the waters were sweetened.” Because then, the bitterness and the deadly poison depart from the Torah, and the sweetness within it — which is the elixir of life — is revealed. The Tree of Life is Moses the Messiah, meaning the soul of Moses that will be revealed with the coming of the Mashiach. It is said about him before the coming of the Mashiach: “וּמַטֵּה הָאֱלֹהִים בְּיָדוֹ” “The staff of God is in his hand.” (Exodus 17:9) The staff of God is the secret of Metat-on. On one side, he is associated with life; on the other side, with death. This is because he has the nature of transforming from a serpent (נחש, Snake) into a staff (מטה) and from a staff back into a serpent. When he turns into a staff, he is an aid to Moses on the side of goodness, and life flows from him. But when he turns into a serpent, he turns against Moses — for then, death emanates from him — and immediately, “וַיָּנָס מֹשֶׁה מִפָּנָיו” “Moses fled from before it.” (Exodus 4:3)
Notes:
Repentance transforms the Torah from a source of bitterness into a source of sweetness — from deadly poison into the elixir of life. This is symbolized by the Tree of Life, represented by Moses as the aid of Mashiach and the staff of God, which has both potential for life and death depending on one’s spiritual state. The key to unlocking the sweetness of the Torah is teshuvah (repentance).
#263
And the Holy One, Blessed be He, delivered Metat-on into the hands of Moses, so that Moses would use him according to the secret of the “Staff of God”. For when Metat-on is in the hand of Moses, he is a staff; but he only turns into a serpent when he is not in the hand of Moses. And [Metat-on] is the Oral Torah, within which there is prohibition and permission, that is, matters of “אִסּוּר וְהֶתֵּר” forbidden and permitted — just like Metat-on, who corresponds to the Torah of the world of Beriah (Creation), which contains both aspects (good and evil). But in Atzilut (the world of Emanation) — “No evil will dwell with You.” (Psalms 5:5) And the entire Torah there consists only of the Names of the Holy One, Blessed be He, as is known.
#264
Furthermore, it can be explained on the verse: “וּמִשָּׁם יִפָּרֵד וְהָיָה לְאַרְבָּעָה רָאשִׁים” “And from there it was separated…” (Genesis 2:10) Happy is the man who engages in Torah study, because at the time when the Holy One, Blessed be He, takes him from this body — meaning from the four elemental foundations of separation within him — then he becomes separated from them and rises to be a head over the four living creatures of the Chariot (Merkavah). And about them it is said: “עַל-כַּפַּיִם יִשָּׂאוּנְךָ פֶּן-תִּגֹּף בָּאֶבֶן רַגְלֶךָ” “They shall bear you up in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” (Psalms 91:12) Instead of being sunken in the four elemental bodily desires of separation, he merits — through engagement in Torah — that the Holy One, Blessed be He, will separate him from the lusts of the elemental body, and elevate him above, making him a head over the four Living Creatures of the Merkavah. And the חיות Chayot will bear him up, as it is written: “They shall bear you up on their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.”
Notes:
A person who engages in Torah study merits to be separated from the desires of his physical body and is elevated to become a spiritual head over the Chayot (living creatures) of the Merkavah — the highest angelic forces. They, in turn, uphold and protect him, as promised in the verse: “They shall bear you up on their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” (Psalms 91:12)
