278. דָּבָר אַחֵר וַיִּסְגֹּר בָּשָׂר – רָצוּ לְהָגֵן עָלָיו בָּהּ. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיִּסְגֹּר ה’ בַּעֲדוֹ. דָּבָר אַחֵר וַיִּסְגֹּר – כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (שמות כה) לְעֻמַּת הַמִּסְגֶּרֶת, מִסְגֶּרֶת מִתְקַיֶּמֶת, שֶׁבָּהּ הַגְּבִירָה (יחזקאל מו) יִהְיֶה סָגוּר שֵׁשֶׁת יְמֵי הַמַּעֲשֶׂה.

“‘ה’ אֱלֹקִים’ (Hashem Elokim) refers to Abba v’Imma (Father and Mother, Chokhmah and Binah). Tardemah (deep sleep) signifies exile (galut), as it is said regarding exile, ‘וְתַרְדֵּמָה נָפְלָה עַל־אַבְרָם’—’ And a deep sleep fell upon Abram’ (Genesis 15:12). So too here, tardemah signifies exile. He caused a deep sleep to fall upon Moses, and he slept, and sleep is none other than exile. This means that in sleep, the Mochin are withdrawn, and so too in exile, da’at (knowledge) is withdrawn from Israel; therefore, sleep is none other than exile.
It is asked regarding the verse, ‘וַיִּקַּח אַחַת מִצַּלְעֹתָיו’ ‘And He took one of his ribs’ (Genesis 2:21)—from whose ribs did He take? It is said: Rather, from those maidens (עלמות) of the Matronita (Shechinah/Malchut), Abba v’Imma took one of them. This is the aspect of white (לבן), as it is said of her, ‘beautiful as the moon’ (yafah k’levanah). The explanation is as follows: It is known that Malchut in her own aspect is not worthy of receiving Mochin, for she was restricted in the first contraction (first tzimtzum) not to receive any direct light (אור ישר). Her entire rectification (tikkun) comes through her ascent and integration into the attribute of mercy, which is Binah, called Abba v’Imma. However, in the future, at the final rectification (End of the tikkun), in the secret of Moses and the two Mashiachs, as mentioned above, she will be rectified in her own aspect and become worthy of receiving direct light, without needing to be sweetened by Binah.
Therefore, there are two aspects of building the Shechinah: (1) Before the final rectification, through sweetening by her ascent to Abba v’Imma, and this is for the Central Column, which is Zeir Anpin. (2) At the final rectification, in her own aspect, and this is the secret of Moses. This is what is meant (in section 276) regarding the final exile, ‘וּלְאָדָם לֹא־מָצָא עֵזֶר’—’ And for the man, He did not find a helper’ (Genesis 2:20), referring to the rectification of Moses and the two Mashiachs. For even after her integration into Binah, she can only receive the first nine sefirot, but her own aspect, which is her Malchut, remains unrectified, and this is the secret of the final exile, as mentioned above. Therefore, it is said of her, ‘וּלְאָדָם לֹא־מָצָא עֵזֶר’—’ And for the man, He did not find a helper,’ but rather all are against him. This is what is meant at that time: ‘וַיַּפֵּל ה’ אֱלֹקִים תַּרְדֵּמָה’—’ And Hashem Elokim caused a deep sleep’ (Genesis 2:21), for there is no sleep but exile. Because no helper was found to rectify her, the final exile was decreed upon her, and her rectification is through Moses.
Before the final rectification, which comes through her ascent, the rectification is through the Central Column, as mentioned above. This is what is meant by, ‘And so too the Central Column… from exile,’ referring to the first three exiles before the final exile, where the rectification is through the Central Column. He proceeds to explain to us the two rectifications: the rectification of the Central column and the rectification of Moses. This is what is meant by, ‘And He took…’—from those maidens of the Matronita, Abba v’Imma took one of them, and this is the white side. For the seven sefirot of Malchut that she received from Abba v’Imma during her state of smallness (katnut) are called alamot (עלמות, maidens). It is said that Abba v’Imma took one of them, which is Chessed among them, for Chessed is considered the color white, ‘beautiful as the moon’ (יָפָה כַלְּבָנָה). This means that through the building of the greatness (gadlut) of Abba v’Imma, to complete with her the Malchut of Malchut that was lacking, she becomes through this ‘יָפָה כַלְּבָנָה’ ‘beautiful as the moon.’

Another interpretation of the verse ‘וַיִּסְגֹּר בָּשָׂר תַּחְתֶּנָּה’—’ and He closed up the flesh in its place’ (Genesis 2:21): This is to protect her (the Shechinah) from the external forces, for ‘וַיִּסְגֹּר’ (He closed) implies protection, in the manner of the verse ‘וַיִּסְגֹּר יְהוָה בַּעֲדוֹ’—’ and Hashem closed it for him’ (Genesis 7:16). Through the holy Gevurah (strength) of the red flesh of Moses, the external forces are driven away.
Another interpretation of the verse ‘וַיִּסְגֹּר’: It refers to a closing, in the manner of the scriptural term for a frame, as a frame was made through the red flesh of Moses, within which the Matronita—that is, Malchut—is closed during the six days of creation ‘יִהְיֶה סָגוּר שֵׁשֶׁת יְמֵי הַמַּעֲשֶׂה’. It is only on the day of Shabbat that it is opened.
