Daily Zohar 4944

#330
“When the earth (Nukva) returned to sit in her own place, separated from the back (אחוריים) of Zeir Anpin (Z” A), called heavens (שמים), it is written, ‘וְהָאָרֶץ הָיְתָה תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ’—’ And the earth was tohu va’vohu (formless and void)’ (Genesis 1:2), desiring to return and cleave to the heavens as one, as before. This is because the earth saw the heavens shining, while she was darkened. This means: After she separated from Z” A through the light of Chokhmah that she received from Yisrael Sava and Tevunah, for Yisrael Sava and Tevunah ascended to the head of Arich Anpin (א” א, A” A) and became Chokhmah, and bestowed upon the Nukva, then she had Chokhmah without Chessed. For Arich Anpin is entirely Chokhmah, and the seven lower sefirot (ז” ת) cannot receive Chokhmah without Chessed. Therefore, the Nukva was darkened, and she yearned to return and cleave to Z” A at his back, in order to shine, at the very least, with Chessed like Z”A.
The darkness (חושך) continued in the Nukva until the supernal light emerged and was drawn to her and shone upon her. Then she returned to gaze upon the heavens, which is Z”A, face-to-face. Then the earth, which is the Nukva, was rectified, and she was sweetened from the judgments that were in her. This means she ascended for impregnation (עיבור, ibur) to Abba and Imma anew and attained from them Mochin of the front (פנים, panim).
Notes:
After separating from Z” A’s back (אחוריים, achoraim, chest downward, previous section), the Nukva receives Chokhmah’s Mochin from Yisrael Sava and Tevunah, which ascended to Arich Anpin’s head (Keter, pure Chokhmah). Without Chessed to balance Chokhmah, the Nukva’s vessels (ז” ת, seven lower sefirot) cannot sustain this light, leading to darkness and a tohu va’vohu state (Genesis 1:2). She yearns to return to Z”A’s back (achoraim) to regain Chessed’s light, reflecting her initial unity.
The Nukva’s initial unity with Z”A (achoraim) parallels Adam and Eve’s unity (Genesis 1:27, זכר ונקבה…). Her separation and darkened state mirror Eve’s creation from Adam’s צלע, tzela (Genesis 2:21-22), leading to vulnerability (sin, klipot, Genesis 3:1). The face-to-face (panim b’panim) union reflects Adam and Eve’s rectified partnership (עזר כנגדו), countering klipot (Genesis 3:14).

Now it explains how the Nukva receives the supernal light. It says: The light goes out on the right side, for it is received by Zeir Anpin (Z” A), which is the secret of the right. The darkness remains on the left side, which is the Nukva. Then Z”A separates the darkness from the light so that they may be included in each other. Through the power of this separation, the Nukva receives the light from Z”A, as it explained before us. This is the meaning of ‘וַיַּבְדֵּל אֱלֹקִים בֵּין הָאוֹר וּבֵין הַחֹשֶׁךְ’—’And God separated between the light and the darkness’ (Genesis 1:4). Through this separation, ‘וַיִּקְרָא אֱלֹקִים לָאוֹר יוֹם וְלַחֹשֶׁךְ קָרָא לָיְלָה’—’And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night’ (Genesis 1:5). Day and night were coupled and became one day (יום אחד).
And if you say that the verse ‘And God separated between the light and the darkness’ means an actual separation, meaning a division between the light and the darkness, it says: Not so. Rather, the meaning is that the day comes from the side of the light, which is the right, and the night comes from the side of the darkness, which is the left. When they emerged and ruled as one, He separated them, and the separation was from the side of Z”A, so that they may gaze face-to-face and cleave to each other, to become completely one. This is the secret of the separation in the order of illumination, which is considered to operate in the secret of the zivug (union) for the sustenance of the world.
Notes:
This Zohar passage interprets Genesis 1:4-5, “And God separated between the light and the darkness… And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night,” focusing on the dynamic between Zeir Anpin (Z” A, light, day, right) and the Nukva (Malchut, darkness, night, left). It redefines “separation” (הבדלה, havdalah) as a process enabling their mutual inclusion and פנים בפנים, panim b’panim (face-to-face) union.
