Daily Zohar # 5225 – Vayikra – Where sustenance come from

Rabbi Chiya opened and said, “הַרְעִיפוּ שָׁמַיִם מִמַּעַל” “Drop down, you heavens, from above…” (Isaiah 45:8). This verse is a secret of wisdom that I learned from the Holy Luminary (Rabbi Shimon). “Drop down, you heavens, from above” — what is “drop down”? It is as you say, “יַעֲרֹף כַּמָּטָר לִקְחִי” “My doctrine shall drop as the rain” (Deuteronomy 32:2). And concerning the matter of rain, which is the food of everything, he says this. And therefore all the eyes of the world look to the Holy One, blessed be He, for food, because He gives food to all and sustains all, as it is written, “עֵינֵי כֹל אֵלֶיךָ יְשַׂבֵּרוּ” “The eyes of all wait upon You…” (Psalms 145:15).
Notes:
Rabbi Chiya teaches that the verse about the heavens dropping down refers to the flow of sustenance. All creatures look to the Holy One, blessed be He, for their food, because He alone sustains everything.

And if you say that the matter depends on this place called “heavens,” which is Zeir Anpin — but we have learned that food does not depend on merit, and “merit” we have established is tzedakah (righteousness/charity), that is Zeir Anpin, for the Aramaic translation of tzedakah is “zekhut” (merit), and merit and heavens are one thing. So it does not depend on the heavens, which is Zeir Anpin. And here it is written, “Drop down, you heavens.” And he answers, ” It is written ‘from above,’ that is, from the heavens from above — from above certainly, for it comes from Atika Kadisha, who is Arich Anpin, from whom food is drawn, and not from that place called heavens and called merit, but from above exactly. ”
Notes:
Although the verse mentions “heavens” (Zeir Anpin), the true source of sustenance is higher — from Atika Kadisha (Arich Anpin). The phrase “from above” points to this higher origin beyond the level of Zeir Anpin.
