Zohar Noach
Continued from previous DZ
#188
Rabbi Yitzchak said, And with all this, once the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him, ‘וַהֲקִמֹתִי אֶת בְּרִיתִי אִתָּךְ” “And I will establish My covenant with you’ (Genesis 6:18); he should have asked for mercy upon them. He should have offered the sacrifice after the Flood; he should have offered it before that. Perhaps he would have quieted the anger from the world.
Notes:
Once Noah was promised the covenant, he should have prayed for mercy on the world. The offering he brought after the Flood should have been brought earlier, and it might have quieted the anger.
#189
Rabbi Yehuda said, What was there for Noah to do? For the wicked of the world were provoking before the Holy One, blessed be He, and he should offer an offering for them? Rather, certainly Noah was afraid for himself, that death would not overtake him among the wicked of the world. For he saw their evil deeds all day, and how they provoked the Holy One, blessed be He, all day.
Notes:
Rabbi Yehuda answers that Noah could not offer for the wicked who were provoking the Holy One, blessed be He. He feared for his own life among them, seeing their evil deeds and constant provocation.
#190
Rabbi Yitzchak said, Every time that the wicked of the world increase, the righteous one who is found among them is punished first, as it is written, “וּמִמִּקְדָּשִׁי תָּחֵלּוּ” “and from My sanctuary begin” (Ezekiel 9:6). And we have learned: Do not read “from My sanctuary,” but “from My sanctified ones.” And according to this, Noah — how did the Holy One, blessed be He, save him among all those wicked ones? And he says: Rather, because offspring were to go out from him into the world, He saved him, for he was righteous as is fitting. That is, he was fit to bring out corrected offspring.
Notes:
When the wicked increase, the righteous among them are punished first, for judgment begins with the sanctified. Noah was saved among the wicked so that corrected offspring would go out from him into the world.
