#191
Further, he warned them every day, but they did not accept it. And he fulfilled in himself the verse that is written, “וְאַתָּה כִּי הִזְהַרְתָּ רָשָׁע וְלֹא שָׁב מֵרִשְׁעוֹ וּמִדַּרְכּוֹ הָרְשָׁעָה הוּא בַּעֲוֹנוֹ יָמוּת וְאַתָּה אֶת נַפְשְׁךָ הִצַּלְתָּ” “And you, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity, but you have saved your soul” (Ezekiel 3:19). From here, whoever warns the wicked, even though he did not accept from him, has saved himself, and that wicked one is caught in his sin. And he asks, Until when is he obligated to warn him? And he says, Until he strikes him. And the friends have already explained it.
Notes:
Noah warned the wicked every day, and they did not accept. One who warns the wicked saves himself, even if the wicked does not turn, and the wicked one is caught in his sin. The warning is required until the wicked one strikes him.
#192
Rabbi Yossi was found before Rabbi Shimon. One day he said to him, What did the Holy One, blessed be He, see, to destroy all the animals of the field and all the birds of the heavens together with the wicked? If human beings sinned, what did the beasts and the birds of the heavens and the rest of the creatures sin? He said to him, Because it is written, ‘כִּי הִשְׁחִית כָּל בָּשָׂר אֶת דַּרְכּוֹ עַל הָאָרֶץ” “for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth’ (Genesis 6:12). All of them were corrupting their way; they left their own kind and clung to another kind.
Notes:
The animals and birds were destroyed with the wicked because they, too, corrupted their way. They left their own kind and clung to another kind.
