#211

And this is: “מִזְמוֹר שִׁירוּ לַיהוָה שִׁיר חָדָשׁ” “A psalm: Sing to YHVH a new song” (Psalms 96:1). This praise we have already explained (in Chayei Sarah, #29). But even though we have commented on it, the awakening of the friends who awakened regarding this is beautiful: they said that these were the cows that carried the Ark, who awakened with this praise, as it is said: “וַתִּישַׁרְנָה הַפָּרוֹת בַּדֶּרֶךְ” “And the cows where singing on the way” (1 Samuel 6:12) — what is the song that they were saying? It is “מִזְמוֹר שִׁירוּ לַיהוָה שִׁיר חָדָשׁ כִּי נִפְלָאוֹת עָשָׂה” “A psalm: Sing to YHVH a new song, for He has done wondrous things” (Psalms 96:1).
This secret is like that above: at the hour when the Chayot (holy living creatures) carry the Throne — which is Malchut — to raise it upward to Zeir Anpin, they recite this praise.
Notes:
The Zohar connects Psalms 96 (“Sing to YHVH a new song”) to the mystical praise recited when Malchut (the Throne/Ark) ascends and unites with Zeir Anpin on Shabbat. This mirrors the biblical episode of the cows carrying the Ark (1 Samuel 6), who “sang” straight ahead — symbolizing the Chayot HaKodesh (holy living creatures) bearing Malchut upward in the supernal realms. The “new song” signifies the fresh, elevated revelation and union achieved on Shabbat, where Malchut is raised and perfected through this divine ascent and praise.

And if you say: Why is it written here “New” “חדש” — as it is written “שִׁיר חָדָשׁ” “a new song” — when behold they always recite this praise?
And he answers: Rather, certainly it is new. For it is not called “new” except in the renewal of the moon — which is Malchut — when she illuminates from the sun, which is Zeir Anpin. Then she is new, and this is “שִׁיר חָדָשׁ” “a new song.” For every time Malchut ascends for union with Zeir Anpin, she is considered as renewed. In the secret that every time she returns to being a virgin.
“הוֹשִׁיעָה לּוֹ יְמִינוֹ וּזְרוֹעַ קָדְשׁוֹ” “His right hand and His holy arm have wrought salvation for Him” (Psalms 98:1) — this is the awakening of right and left, which are Chessed and Gevurah, to receive her.
Notes:
The Zohar explains “שִׁיר חָדָשׁ” (“a new song,” Psalms 96:1) as referring to the renewal of Malchut (“the moon”) each time she ascends and unites with Zeir Anpin (“the sun”) on Shabbat. This union makes her “new” and “virgin-like” — perpetually fresh in her rectified state, free from prior attachments to impurity. The awakening of Chessed (right) and Gevurah (left) extends to fully receive and embrace her, enabling the complete divine union and the manifestation of this “new song” of praise.
