בְּ”רֵאשִׁית בָּ”רָא אֱ”לֹהִים, “In the Beginning God Created”. The initials of these three words are בבא and it means ‘a gate’.
The 4th part (out of six) of the Talmud is called ‘Nezikin’, meaning ‘damages’ and it discusses laws related to cause and effect. This book has 10 tractates (inner books) and the first three are ‘gates’. בבא קמא is the ‘first gate’. בבא מציעא is the ‘middle gate’ and בבא בתרא is the ‘last gate’.
The secret of the three ‘gates’ is related to our correction process. The Talmud uses different symbols like ox and donkey. They have aspects of good and bad and we need to learn to control them to make the good out of every situation.
“וַיְהִי-לִי שׁוֹר וַחֲמוֹר, צֹאן וְעֶבֶד וְשִׁפְחָה; וָאֶשְׁלְחָה לְהַגִּיד לַאדֹנִי, לִמְצֹא-חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךָ.”
“And I have oxen, and donkey and flocks, and men-servants and maid-servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favour in thy sight.’”
Esau was looking to kill Jacob for ‘stealing’ his first born blessings from their father, Isaac. He came with an army of 400 people to do the job. Jacob sent messengers to Esau, instructing them to tell his brother that he lived with Lavan and that he had ox and donkey.
The deeper meaning here is that Jacob wanted to warn Esau from engaging war with him. The message that was delivered told Esau that Jacob dealt with the powerful Lavan and also cleared all negative issues that are the negative aspects of Ox and Donkey.
“לֹא-תַחֲרֹשׁ בְּשׁוֹר-וּבַחֲמֹר, יַחְדָּו”
“You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together.”
The negative side of the ox is considered as the male aspect of the Klipah and the negative side of the donkey is the aspect of the female of the Klipah. When we let them be together, then they have unification and create great negativity.
We should learn from Jacob that by controlling our negativity and not letting it grow, we can turn the negative side to positive. The Torah tells us that when they met, Esau hugged Jacob and instead of biting him he kissed him on the neck.
