From Zohar Vayishlach 230, 231, 232 (verses related to the portion of Nitzavim)

The Zohar explains that since the day the Holy Temple destroyed, everyday has rage and anger. The energy of joy was removed from the upper and lower levels and the Israelites went into exile. They are under the influence of other gods.

Deuteronomy 28:36
YHVH will bring you and your king whom you set over you to a nation that neither you nor your fathers have known. And there you shall serve other gods of wood and stone”

The cause for the exile is as stated in Deuteronomy 28:47
“Because you did not serve YHVH your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things,”

The Zohar explains that when the Israelites were in the land of Israel they could connect to Yessod and the Light was shining on them. When in exile they followed the ‘gods of wood and stone’. They represent the material world and dependency on physical power. That will be so until the Holy One Blessed be He wakes up and redeems the Israelites from all the nations.
Deuteronomy 30:3
“then YHVH your God will restore your fortunes and have mercy on you, and he will gather you again from all the peoples where YHVH your God has scattered you.”

Most of the world follows the ‘gods of wood and stone’ and they are happy to be slave to the material world.
The Israelites should feel the pain that comes with the state of exile and distance from the Light. Only when we really feel that we may merit the ‘mercy’ of God and the gathering of all of us will bring back the Light and building the Third and final Holy temple.
