Song of Songs 4:8
“Come with me from Lebanon, my bride; come with me from Lebanon. Gift from the head of Amana, from the peak of Senir and Hermon, from the dens of lions, from the mountains of leopards.”
The Zohar explains that ‘from the peak of Senir and Hermon’ is mount Sinai, where the Israelites stood under it to receive the Torah. ‘From the dens of lions’ and ‘the mountains of leopards’ are the aspects of the nations that didn’t want to receive the Torah.
God offered the Torah to different nations but they all refused to accept it for reasons related to desires for the self alone. When he came to the Israelites the angels wanted to receive the Torah for themselves, saying (Psalms 8:2)
“יְהוָה אֲדֹנֵינוּ– מָה-אַדִּיר שִׁמְךָ, בְּכָל-הָאָרֶץ;
“ O YHVH, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.”
