Zohar Shemini
Continued from previous DZ

Nadav and Avihu were pure and as new priests they could see the perfection of the unification between Zeir Anpin and Binah that was created with the initiation of the Holy Tabernacle. They wanted to connect this perfect state of unity to Malchut forever, allowing continuous flow of Light to the world, which is the state that will be after the Final Redemption. There are many commentaries about the act of Nadav and Avihu and they all lead to the understanding that the consciousness of the brothers was pure but unfortunately they weren’t ready for this high level of connection and it wasn’t in God’s plan anyway.

The Israelites still had to follow a process of correction and preparation of their vessel. As individuals and as a nation they need to earn the reward of living in a perfect world with no death. Even though their desire was pure Nadav and Avihu didn’t have the vessel for the Light they wanted to bring to the world. God didn’t let them die as people who did something wrong, he took their souls in a merciful way. A fire came down, entered their nostrils (Zeir Anpin) and took their souls into a holding state.

We know that their ‘death’ was not regular because Moses prohibited the family from acting in mourning. (Genesis 10:6)
The Zohar revealed to us that their souls waited to join with Pinchas gaining immortality as the Light they wanted to draw into this world with their selfless act.
