The souls that leaves the body at night have the fear of dealing with the negative entities of the other side. We prepare ourselves for that in the Evening prayer. Before we enter the prayer of Amida, Silent prayer, world of Atziluth, we say a blessing “בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה’ שׁומֵר עַמּו יִשרָאֵל לָעַד”, “Blessed you are YHVH, protector of his people, Israel.”
After the Amida we read Psalms 121, ‘שיר למעלות’ that include six times the root of the word for protection ‘שמר’.
Because of the fear of the soul to go up at night and get hurt with judgments during the night, we add the prayer of bedtime. The PDF below explains the prayer in details. The shortest version for protection is to recite Ana B’Koach, Shema Israel and the verse The last thing that we say
“בְּיָדְךָ אַפְקִיד רוּחִי פָּדִיתָה אוֹתִי יְהוָה אֵל אֱמֶת”
“Into Your hand I commit my soul; You have ransomed me, O YHVH, God of truth.”
Transliteration: “Beyadcha afkid ruchi padita oti adonai el emet”
When we commit our soul in the hands of God, we have his protection and guaranteed that our soul will return to us in the morning.
While you may do the bedtime prayer shortly before you go to sleep, these words should be the last thing we say before going to sleep. If we wake up at night and go back to sleep then we need to repeat this verse only to resume the protection.
