“יְהוָה יִשְׁמָר צֵאתְךָ וּבוֹאֶךָ מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם.”
“YHVH will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever.”
Rabbi Aba says that even though a person ‘coming in’ to his home feels safe and has no fear, the Mezuzah connects to the supernal name that protects the person when he goes out or comes in. This protection escorts and protect him when he looks at the name on the Mezuzah at the door.
The protection is not just when going out and coming in because it is ‘from this time forth and forever’; the protection is in this world and in the world to come.
Connecting to the Holy Name protects us on the corporeal and soul levels. It is important to connect to the Mezuzah when leaving home and coming in. Some people get into the habit of touching and kissing the Mezuzah, which helps them not to forget the Mezuzah. The most important is to look at the Mezuzah and meditate on the name שדי.
