Zohar Beresheet

#94
In the world below, a man has an image and a form but doesn’t have an eternal state of existence like the supernal angels above. The soul levels of Nefesh, Ruach, and Neshama of man require a vessel and outer garment with a predefined time to exist. The angels above come from the unification of Father and Mother of Atzilut. They receive Light into their own vessels without the need for an outer garment.
The souls of people in this world come from the unification of Zeir Anpin and Nukva of Atzilut. They can’t receive ‘אור ישר,’’ direct light’ into their vessels unless they have a garment to receive returning Light, ‘אור חוזר.’ For that reason, they can not exist forever.
When the garment gets flawed to the point that it cannot support the soul, the lights of Nefesh, Ruach, and Neshama leave the vessel and die.

#95
During night sleep, the Ruach of a person is undressed from the body that is the dress for the soul. The Ruach goes up, and the special fire that consumes other fires, meaning the Nukva of Zeir Anpin, consumes and burns it. Then the Ruach returns to its original living state and garments. Because the human souls don’t have a permanent living state as the supernal angels, they need to be burnt and renewed at night.
“מוֹדֶה אֲנִי לְפָנֶיךָ מֶלֶךְ חַי וְקַיָּם, שֶׁהֶחֱזַרְתָּ בִּי נִשְׁמָתִי בְּחֶמְלָה. רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶךָ.”
“I give thanks to You, living and eternal King, for returning my soul to me, mercifully; Your faithfulness is great”
It comes from Lamentation 3:23
“חֲדָשִׁים לַבְּקָרִים רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶךָ.”
“They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
We say these words every morning upon waking up, understanding that Hashem with his infinite mercy returned the soul to us, renewed.

Lesson;
Each night we go through a process of soul renewal. The burning of the soul is a method to cleanse and remove the ‘toil’ of the day and make the soul, according to its merits, ready for a new day.
The sages teach us that to have the soul returned to us in a better shape than the day before, we ‘deposit’ the soul into Hashem’s hands before going to sleep.
