Zohar Emor
Continued from previous DZ
#336
The Holy One, Blessed be He, said to Adam, “Adam, you have abandoned Life and clung to death. Life is as it is written, ‘And the Tree of Life was in the midst of the garden’ (Genesis 2:9). The tree is called Life because whoever holds onto it does not ever taste the taste of death. But you clung to another tree; therefore, surely death is before you.” As it is written,
Proverbs 5:5
“Her feet go down to death, Her steps lay hold of hell.”
And it is also written,
Ecclesiastes 7:26
“And I find more bitter than death The woman whose heart is snares and nets, Whose hands are fetters. He who pleases God shall escape from her, But the sinner shall be trapped by her.”
Surely, he clung to the place of death and left the place of Life. Therefore, death was decreed upon him and upon the whole world.

#337
He asked, “If Adam sinned, what sin did the whole world commit, and why was death decreed upon the entire world? And if you say that all creatures came and ate from that tree, and it was taken from them all, it is not so. Rather, when Adam stood up on his feet, all the creatures saw him and were in awe and fear of him, and they followed him like servants before the king. And he said to them, ‘I and you, ‘
Psalm 95:6
“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before YHVH, our Maker.”
And they all followed him. They all followed him when they saw Adam bowing to that place, to the Tree of Knowledge, and clinging to it. Therefore, he caused death for himself and the whole world.

#338
Then Adam changed into many forms: sometimes good and sometimes bad, sometimes anger and sometimes calm, sometimes judgment and sometimes mercy, sometimes Life and sometimes death. He does not remain consistently in any one state. This is because that place, meaning the Tree of Knowledge, caused him to be this way. Therefore, it is called “לַהַט הַחֶרֶב הַמִּתְהַפֶּכֶת” “the flaming sword that turns every way,” (Genesis 3:24) from side to side, from good to bad, from mercy to judgment, from peace to war. It turns in all directions and is called “good and bad.” As it is written,
Genesis 2:17
“but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Lesson;
Adam’s sin was ignoring Hashem’s advice and connecting to the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, representing death. Adam brought mortality upon himself and the world.
This Zohar teaching emphasizes the profound impact of the Tree of Knowledge on human nature, highlighting the introduction of duality and the resulting instability in human behavior and experience. By adhering to the Torah laws, we avoid the chaos that comes from the Tree of Knowledge, which gives us the choice to connect to the Tree of Life and earn merits for the Final Redemption, restoring immortality.
