Hebrew translation:

240. אָמַר לוֹ, אִם כָּךְ, (שמות יב) אַךְ בַּיּוֹם הָרִאשׁוֹן תַּשְׁבִּיתוּ שְּׂאֹר מִבָּתֵיכֶם, וְשָׁנִינוּ אַךְ – חִלֵּק, חֶצְיוֹ אָסוּר בַּאֲכִילַת חָמֵץ וְחֶצְיוֹ מֻתָּר. אַף כָּאן אַךְ בֶּעָשׂוֹר לַחֹדֶשׁ, אֱמֹר שֶׁחֶצְיוֹ אָסוּר בִּמְלָאכָה (בַּאֲכִילָה) וְחֶצְיוֹ מֻתָּר. אָמַר לוֹ, אַף כָּאן בִּוְעִנִּיתֶם אֶת נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם זֶה תָּלוּי, שֶׁהֲרֵי עִנּוּי לֹא נִמְצָא אֶלָּא מֵחֲצוֹת הַיּוֹם וְאֵילָךְ, וְיָפֶה הוּא אַךְ חִלֵּק בִּוְעִנִּיתֶם אֶת נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם.
241. אָמַר רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר, כָּתוּב כִּי בַיּוֹם הַזֶּה יְכַפֵּר עֲלֵיכֶם וְגוֹ’. אֲכַפֵּר עֲלֵיכֶם הָיָה צָרִיךְ לִהְיוֹת! אֶלָּא יְכַפֵּר עֲלֵיכֶם – לְהַכְלִיל אֶת הַיּוֹבֵל שֶׁשּׁוֹפֵעַ מַעְיָנוֹת לְהַשְׁקוֹת בַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה לְכָל עֵבֶר לְרַוּוֹת אֶת הַכֹּל וּלְהַשְׁקוֹת אֶת הַכֹּל. וְזֶה עֲלֵיכֶם, כְּלוֹמַר עֲבוּרְכֶם, לְטַהֶרְכֶם בַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה, שֶׁכָּתוּב לִפְנֵי ה’ תִּטְהָרוּ, וְלֹא יִשְׁלֹט עֲלֵיכֶם הַדִּין.
242. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אָמַר, אַשְׁרֵיהֶם יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא הִתְרַצָּה בָּהֶם וְרוֹצֶה לְטַהֵר אוֹתָם שֶׁלֹּא יִמָּצֵא בָהֶם חֵטְא, כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיוּ בְּנֵי הֵיכָלוֹ וְיָדוּרוּ בְהֵיכָלוֹ. וְלֶעָתִיד לָבֹא כָּתוּב, (יחזקאל לו) וְזָרַקְתִּי עֲלֵיכֶם מַיִם טְהוֹרִים וְגוֹ’.

Rabbi Abba said: If that is the case, let us examine another verse where the word “אך” (“however”) is used, such as in “אַךְ בַּיּוֹם הָרִאשׁוֹן תַּשְׁבִּיתוּ שְּׂאֹר מִבָּתֵּיכֶם”  “However, on the first day, you shall remove leaven from your houses” (Exodus 12:15). We have learned that “אך” (however) divides, meaning half of the day is prohibited for eating leaven, and half is permitted. So here, too, where it is written, “However, on the tenth of the month,” it could be said that half of the day is forbidden (for eating) and half is permitted.
Rabbi Abba answered: Even here, regarding “וְעִנִּיתֶם אֶת נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם” “afflicting your souls,” the concept of division applies, for the affliction only truly begins from midday onwards, meaning after the time of eating. Therefore, the word “אך” (however) indeed implies division, and it fits well with the concept of afflicting your soul (fasting).

Rabbi Elazar said: It is written, “כִּי בַיּוֹם הַזֶּה יְכַפֵּר עֲלֵיכֶם” “For on this day, He shall atone for you” (Leviticus 16:30). It should have said, “אֲכַפֵּר עֲלֵיכֶם” “I will atone for you,” in the first person as if He is speaking directly. Why does it say in the third person, “He shall atone for you”? Rabbi Elazar answers: The use of “יְכַפֵּר עֲלֵיכֶם” “He shall atone” in the third person also includes the Jubilee, which represents Binah, from which streams, meaning the illumination of Chokma, flow to water everything. This means that the atonement on this day comes from Binah, providing nourishment and spiritual fulfillment for everyone, cleansing and purifying them, as it says, “לִפְנֵי ה’ תִּטְהָרוּ” “Before G-d, you shall be purified.” Thus, on this day, the forces of judgment will not dominate.

Notes:
On Yom Kippur, Light flows into the lower levels through Binah, providing a cleansing force that purifies Israel’s souls. This purification occurs “before Hashem,” where no forces of judgment can prevail. Instead, the light of CHokmah from Binah ensures that atonement is given to those who seek it.

Rabbi Yehuda said: Blessed are Israel, for the Holy One, Blessed Be He, desired them and wanted to purify them so that no sin would be found in them, allowing them to be his children and dwell in His holy palace. In the future, it is written, 
Ezekiel 36:25
“וְזָרַקְתִּי עֲלֵיכֶם מַיִם טְהוֹרִים וּטְהַרְתֶּם מִכֹּל טֻמְאוֹתֵיכֶם וּמִכָּל גִּלּוּלֵיכֶם אֲטַהֵר אֶתְכֶם.”
“And I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean.”

Notes:
The ‘water’ refers to spiritual purification, symbolizing the cleansing of sin, which makes Israel fit to dwell in Hashem’s palace.
This purification process will be complete in the future, as foretold in Ezekiel, where God promises to purify His people, ensuring that they are spiritually clean, free from sin, and able to be in His presence. This process signifies the ultimate elevation of Israel to its destined elevated status in the Final Redemption.
