Zohar Acharei Mot
An elder among them went and brought the book of Rabbi Hamnuna Saba. Then, Rabbi Elazar, son of Rabbi Shimon (who was buried among us), was awakened. He prayed for them in the Garden of Eden, and the world was healed. Then, they allowed us to return to the study hall.
From that day, when they took up Rabbi Elazar from this grave here in Gush Ḥalav and placed him alongside his father in Meron, there is no one to awaken to rise before the true Tzadikim, the sleepers of Hebron (the Patriarchs), for we are afraid since that day when they expelled me and my companions from the study hall.
Now, you have come to us with a Torah scroll. I thought, ‘The world is in distress.’ Therefore, I was shaken, thinking, ‘Who will go ahead to inform those true righteous ones, the sleepers of Hebron?’ Rabbi Yesa slipped away and left with that piece of the Torah scroll. Rabbi Ḥizkiyah said, ‘Heaven forbid! The world is not in distress, and we did not come for this.’
And one should not question: ‘But didn’t Rabbi Ḥizkiyah and Rabbi Yessa die in the Idra Rabba (Great Assembly), and Rabbi Elazar son of Rabbi Shimon was still alive, as it is written at the end of the Idra of Parashat Naso?’ These Rabbi Ḥizkiyah and Rabbi Yessa mentioned here are not the same as those in the Idra Rabba.”
