Rabbi Abba said: This section is connected to the wisdom of the Torah, and it is both hidden and revealed, meaning it contains both secret and literal meanings. The entire Torah is like this—composed of the secret and the revealed. There is nothing in the Torah that does not have the holy and supreme Name within it, which is both hidden and revealed. The hidden aspects of the Torah are inherited by the higher holy ones, and the revealed aspects are made known to the rest of the world. This is why it is written,
Psalm 102:22
“לְסַפֵּר בְּצִיּוֹן שֵׁם יְהוָה וּתְהִלָּתוֹ בִּירוּשָׁלָ͏ִם.”
“To recount in Zion the Name of Hashem and His praise in Jerusalem.”
The meaning is that in Zion, within the Temple, it is permitted to pronounce the sacred Name of Hashem as it is, but outside the Temple, it is only referred to by its designation, that is, אדני, Adonai, and not by its written form YHVH יהוה. Thus, everything is both hidden and revealed. The Name “YHVH,” which we are not permitted to pronounce, is hidden, while the Name “Adonai,” which we pronounce, is revealed. This applies to all things. We have learned that anyone who omits even one letter from the Torah or adds one letter to it is as if they are lying about the supreme Holy Name of the King.
Notes:
Rabbi Abba explains the symbolism of the two holy names: Hashem (יהוה), which is not spoken outside the Temple, symbolizes the hidden aspect of God, while Adonai (אדני), the name we use in prayer, represents the revealed, accessible aspect of God. This duality represents the fundamental structure of reality: a balance between what is known and what remains beyond human comprehension.
The section also emphasizes the importance of precision in the Torah, where even the smallest change in the text—adding or subtracting a letter—distorts the Torah’s secrets. Every letter in the Torah has profound spiritual significance, connected to the sacred Name of God.
