#154
“וְאַבְרָהָם זָקֵן בָּא בַּיָּמִים” “And Abraham was old, advanced in days” (Genesis 24:1): Rabbi Bo said in the name of Rabbi Yochanan, “This refers to the world of ‘days,’ meaning the world of light, and not to this world, which is like night.”
Advanced in days” refers to the upper sefirot, which are lights and are called days.
Rabbi Yaakov said, “Advanced in days,” which means that Abraham entered those worlds considered ‘days’ due to the pleasures and yearnings he inherited. Rabbi Yaakov agrees with Rabbi Yochanan but rather expands upon his explanation.
“And YHVH had blessed Abraham in everything”: “בַּכֹּל” “In everything” refers to the authority that the Holy One, Blessed be He, granted Abraham from His own Name, specifically the letter ‘ה’ hei with which the world was created.

Rabbi Yitzchak said, “Metat–, who is a servant of his Master, is appointed over the soul. Each day, he is tasked with bestowing upon the soul a portion of the light he is commanded to grant it. He is also destined to receive a written account from the cemetery, handed to him by Duma (the angel of the grave), detailing every individual body, to present it before his Master.”
As explained earlier, Metatron transforms the bone called luz and reconstructs the body from the earth. He will prepare and rebuild the body to be complete, though initially without the soul. Then, the Holy One, Blessed be He, will send the soul back into its rightful place within the body after it has come to the Land of Israel.
The luz bone—remains in the grave and does not decay. Here, it is said that the angel Metat– transforms this bone into the source for rebuilding the body. The sages (מדרש הנעלם Midrash HaNe’elam, Toldot 51) taught that this bone is called לוז luz, and it does not benefit from the food and drink a person consumes. Therefore, it does not decay in the grave like other bones. From it, the human body will be rebuilt during the resurrection of the dead.
It is necessary to understand why this bone is called לוז luz, why it does not derive nourishment from food and drink, why it does not decay in the grave, and why it is uniquely chosen as the foundation for the body’s reconstruction at the time of resurrection.
Notes:
The Zohar reveals the process of resurrection and the role of the luz bone as the foundation for rebuilding the human body. This bone’s indestructibility and immunity to material consumption highlight its unique role as a bridge between the physical and spiritual. The high angel Metat–‘s involvement as an intermediary in this process underscores the divine organization of life, death, and resurrection.
This teaching reminds us of the enduring connection between the body and soul, showing that a remnant of purity persists even after physical death, awaiting divine restoration. The luz bone symbolizes hope and eternal life, reflecting the ultimate redemption and unity of body and soul in the Final Redemption.
