#96
And Israel below does not exist within calculation (Cheshbon), but rather in a different aspect—concealed Chassadim. However, the redemption (פִּדְיוֹן) they give, which corresponds to Yisrael Saba and Tvunah that, stands within calculation. And for this reason, when Israel is brought into calculation, they must give a redemption (פִּדְיוֹן), as we have said (above in section 92). Therefore, in the days of King David, when he counted Israel but did not take atonement (פִּדְיוֹן, כופר) from them, אhere was divine anger, שnd many armies and camps of Israel perished.
Notes:
This passage reveals a fundamental principle in Jewish mysticism: spiritual entities that exist beyond measurement must not be subjected to finite calculation without safeguards. The redemption offering serves as a spiritual buffer, preventing harsh judgment from manifesting.

For this reason, it is written regarding the construction of the Holy Tabernacle (Mishkan): “…וְכֶסֶף פְּקוּדֵי הָעֵדָה” “And the silver of those who were counted in the congregation…” “לְכֹל הָעֹבֵר עַל הַפְּקֻדִים” “all who passed through the census” (Exodus 38:25). That is, the concept of calculation (Cheshbon), as explained above. And all of it was sanctified for the service of the Mishkan. It has been established as “Kikarim” (talents of silver), meaning one type of calculation, a total of one hundred talents. “Shekalim” (shekels) represents a different kind of calculation, totaling one thousand seven hundred, etc. There are higher aspects that ascend to the supreme calculation, which are the lights of Yisrael Saba and Tvunah, which is Binah. This is called the supreme calculation, and it corresponds to the talents (Kikarim). There are others that ascend to a different level of calculation, which is the calculation within Zeir Anpin, which illuminates Malchut. One is a higher calculation, and one is a lower calculation. And for this reason, it is written: “וַיְהִי מְאַת כִּכָּר הַכֶּסֶף לָצֶקֶת אֵת אַדְנֵי הַקֹּדֶשׁ” “And the hundred talents of silver were used to cast the sockets of the sanctuary…” (Exodus 38:27). These are the sockets that have already been explained, which correspond to Malchut in its totality, which is called Adonai (אדני). For Malchut receives from the supreme calculation, which means it draws from Binah.
Notes:
The term אַדְנֵי הַקֹּדֶשׁ (Adnei HaKodesh, “Sockets of Holiness”) refers to the silver sockets that served as the foundation for the beams (kerashim) of the Mishkan (Holy Tabernacle). These sockets were an essential structural element of the Mishkan, providing stability and support to the sanctuary that housed the Divine Presence.
