Indeed, when the sins of the world increased greatly, though at first the opportunity for Teshuvah still remained, and the people refused to do teshuva, then the Hei (ה)—which is Binah, the source of Teshuvah—withdrew, and the Aleph (א), which is Keter, raised the Vav (ו) and Yud (י) up to itself. And this combination is called “Oy” (אוי). And when the Temple was destroyed, and Teshuvah was removed, then the people cried out and said: “אוֹי לָנוּ כִּי פָנָה הַיּוֹם” “Oy lanu ki fana hayom” – Woe to us, for the day has passed. (Jeremiah 6:4) What is “for the day has passed”? This refers to the Supernal Day—that is, Binah, which is called Teshuvah—that was withdrawn and passed away, and is no longer present. This is the very day known for “פושט ימינו לקבל רשעים” stretching out its right hand to receive and welcome those who sin and return. Now it has turned away from all, and is no longer available. Therefore, they said “Oy” (אוי) and not “Hovoy” (הוי). Because now: “כִּי יִנָּטוּ צִלְלֵי עָרֶב”–The shadows of evening have stretched out—meaning, authority has been given to the ruling Ministers of the other nations to rule over Israel.
