We learned: In the days of Rabbi Shimon, a person would say to his friend: “Open your mouth, and your words will shine.” After Rabbi Shimon passed away, they would say: “Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin” — meaning, do not reveal the secret.
Notes:
During Rabbi Shimon’s lifetime, the generation was spiritually elevated and worthy of receiving the deep secrets of the Torah, which encouraged the open revelation of inner wisdom. After his death, spiritual caution prevailed — and the transmission of sacred secrets required restraint, discernment, and proper preparation. This teaches that timing, audience, and spiritual readiness are essential when sharing mystical teachings.

Rabbi Shimon said: If the people of the world would look into what is written in the Torah, they would not provoke their Master. We learned: When harsh judgments awaken to descend into the world, it is written, “וְאֶל אִשָּׁה בְּנִדַּת טֻמְאָתָהּ” “And to a woman in the impurity of her separation…” (Leviticus 18:19). On this, it is said: “סוֹד ה’ לִירֵאָיו” “The secret of Hashem is to those who fear Him.” (Psalms 25:14) And in the Holy Idra Rabba we learned this. And here I must reveal the secret, for this is the place to which it rises — that is, here is the appropriate place to reveal it.

“If people looked into the Torah…” – Rabbi Shimon laments the spiritual blindness of people who disregard the deeper meanings of Torah. The Torah is not only a book of laws and stories but a cosmic blueprint. If people truly understood its inner dimensions, they would not sin or “provoke their Master,” meaning bring judgment upon themselves or the world.
If humanity deeply contemplated the Torah’s inner wisdom, they would refrain from sin. Harsh judgments in the world often reflect spiritual imbalances related to violations of cosmic laws, such as improper sexual conduct. The deepest secrets of these matters are revealed only to the spiritually worthy, as they are intertwined with the Divine order. Rabbi Shimon reveals this secret here, at a spiritually appropriate moment, illustrating the intimate link between Torah, Divine justice, and cosmic harmony.

We have learned: At the time when the mighty Snake above is aroused through the iniquities of the world, it dwells and connects with the female (nukva) and casts impurity into her. Then, the male separates from her because she has become impure. She is then called “impure,” and it is considered unfit for a male to approach her.
Woe to the world if he is defiled with her at the time she is impure.
Notes:
When people sin, especially in areas of moral impurity, it arouses destructive spiritual forces that pollute the realm of Malchut. This causes a separation between the male and female spiritual forces above, disrupting the flow of blessings to the world. The union of male and female — above and below — must be pure. Joining during a time of spiritual impurity magnifies destruction. The Zohar emphasizes the importance of awareness and purity to maintain spiritual harmony and avoid judgment.
