407. אַשְׁרֵי הַדּוֹר שֶׁרַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן יוֹחַאי שָׁרוּי בְּתוֹכוֹ. אַשְׁרֵי גּוֹרָלוֹ בֵּין עֶלְיוֹנִים וְתַחְתּוֹנִים. עָלָיו כָּתוּב (קהלת י) אַשְׁרֵיךְ אֶרֶץ שֶׁמַּלְכֵּךְ בֶּן חוֹרִים. מַהוּ בֶּן חוֹרִים? שֶׁזּוֹקֵף רֹאשׁ לְגַלּוֹת וּלְפָרֵשׁ דְּבָרִים וְאֵינוֹ פּוֹחֵד. כָּזֶה שֶׁהוּא בֶּן חוֹרִין, וְיֹאמַר מַה שֶּׁהוּא רוֹצֶה וְלֹא פוֹחֵד. מִי זֶה מַלְכֵּךְ? זֶה הוּא רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן יוֹחַאי, בַּעַל הַתּוֹרָה, בַּעַל הַחָכְמָה. שֶׁכְּשֶׁהָיָה רַבִּי אַבָּא וְהַחֲבֵרִים רוֹאִים אֶת רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, הָיוּ רָצִים אַחֲרָיו וְאוֹמְרִים: (הושע יא) אַחֲרֵי ה’ יֵלְכוּ כְּאַרְיֵה יִשְׁאָג.
408. אָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, כָּתוּב (ישעיה סו) וְהָיָה מִדֵּי חֹדֶשׁ בְּחָדְשׁוֹ וּמִדֵּי שַׁבָּת בְּשַׁבַּתּוֹ. לָמָּה שָׁקוּל זֶה בָּזֶה? אֶלָּא הַכֹּל בְּדַרְגָּה אַחַת עוֹלֶה. זֶה מִזְדַּוֵּג עִם זֶה, וְשִׂמְחָה שֶׁל זֶה עִם זֶה לֹא נִמְצֵאת, אֶלָּא כְּשֶׁמִּתְגַּלֶּה הָעַתִּיק הַקָּדוֹשׁ, אָז זוֹהִי חֶדְוַת הַכֹּל. וְשָׁנִינוּ, כָּתוּב (תהלים צב) מִזְמוֹר שִׁיר לְיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת, לְיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת מַמָּשׁ. הַשֶּׁבַח שֶׁמְּשַׁבֵּחַ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, אֲזַי נִמְצֵאת שִׂמְחָה, וּנְשָׁמָה מִתּוֹסֶפֶת. שֶׁהֲרֵי הָעַתִּיק הִתְגַּלָּה, וְהַזִּוּוּג יִזְדַּמֵּן.

Blessed is the generation in which Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai dwells. Blessed is his portion among the upper and lower worlds. Regarding him, it is written: “אַשְׁרֵיךְ אֶרֶץ שֶׁמַּלְכֵּךְ בֶּן חוֹרִים” “Fortunate are you, O land, whose king is a free man” (Ecclesiastes 10:17). What is a “free man”? It refers to one who holds his head high to reveal and explain matters and is not afraid, like a truly free person — he speaks what he wishes and does not fear. Who is your king? This is Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, the master of Torah, the master of wisdom. For when Rabbi Abba and the friends would see Rabbi Shimon, they would run after him, saying: “אַחֲרֵי ה’ יֵלְכוּ כְּאַרְיֵה יִשְׁאָג” “After Hashem they shall go; like a lion He shall roar” (Hosea 11:10).
Notes:
This passage exalts Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai as the supreme spiritual leader of his generation — a “king” who is a “free man,” unafraid to reveal the deepest secrets of the Torah. His courage in speaking supernal wisdom without fear is what makes him a true master of Torah and wisdom. Those around him were so awed by his presence that they felt he embodied the verse, “After Hashem, they shall go; like a lion, He shall roar.”

Rabbi Shimon said: It is written, “וְהָיָה מִדֵּי חֹדֶשׁ בְּחָדְשׁוֹ וּמִדֵּי שַׁבָּת בְּשַׁבַּתּוֹ” “And it shall be from new moon to new moon and from Sabbath to Sabbath” (Isaiah 66:23). He asks: Why are these two [Rosh Chodesh and Shabbat] equated? Why are they considered of equal weight in this verse? He answers: Because everything ascends in one level — this one unites with that one: The day of Shabbat, which corresponds to Zeir Anpin, unites with the new moon, which corresponds to Malchut. And the joy of one in the other is not found — meaning they do not unite — except when Atika Kadisha, the Ancient Holy One (corresponding to Keter, the crown), is revealed. Then, there is joy for all. We have learned: It is written,” מִזְמוֹר שִׁיר לְיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת” “A psalm, a song for the day of Shabbat” (Psalms 92:1) — meaning literally for the day of Shabbat, Zeir Anpin, which is called Shabbat. This is a praise that the Holy One, Blessed be He, praises. Then joy is found, and an additional soul is given because Atika is revealed, and the union of Zeir Anpin and Malchut takes place.
Notes:
The verse from Isaiah equates to Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh because they symbolize the union of Z” A (Shabbat) and Malchut (Rosh Chodesh). However, this union — and the true spiritual joy and elevation — can only occur when the Atika Kadisha is revealed. This revelation takes place on Shabbat, leading to the divine unification and the bestowal of the extra soul, a moment of spiritual alignment and blessing.
