Zohar Vayikra
Continued from previous DZ
#298
Rabbi Yitzchak said: “If the anointed priest shall sin” — this refers to the priest below, who was appointed for the service in the Holy Temple, and a sin is found in him. It is certainly to the guilt of the people, for the people will be held guilty because of this, since woe to those who rely on his service.
Similarly with a prayer leader (שליח ציבור, חזן) in whom a sin is found — woe to those who rely on him.
Rabbi Yehuda said: And all the more so with the Kohen, for all Israel, and the upper and lower beings, all wait and look to be blessed through him.
#299
For we have learned: At the time when the priest begins to direct his intentions (כוונות) and to offer the supernal offering — that is, to offer the union of Malchut and Zeir Anpin — everything is found in blessing and joy. The right, which is Chessed, begins to awaken, and the left, which is judgment, is included in the right, and everything clings and connects one to the other, and they are all blessed together. It turns out that through the priest, the upper and lower levels are blessed. And we have already established this.
And therefore, if he sins, he must offer a sacrifice for himself, so that his iniquity may be atoned for.
Notes:
The Zohar emphasizes the tremendous responsibility of the High Priest (and, by extension, of any priest performing the Temple service). When he sins, the entire people bear guilt because they depend on his service for divine blessing. The same applies to a prayer leader.
When the priest offers the sacrifice with proper intention, he unites Malchut with Zeir Anpin. This awakens Chessed, sweetens Gevurah within it, and brings blessing and joy to all worlds. If the priest sins, he must bring a personal sin-offering to repair the damage he caused to this vital channel. This highlights how the priest’s spiritual state directly affects the flow of blessing between the upper and lower realms.
