Zohar Vayikra
Continued from previous DZ
#301
Rabbi Chiya said: Behold, it is known in which place the High Priest is bound — that he is in Chokhmah. And in which place another priest is bound, and that one who is called the deputy (סגן, segan) is known to be in Chessed.
And therefore another priest offers the sacrifice of the High Priest — who is called the anointed priest (הכהן המשיח)— at the beginning, and elevates it up to that place where he is bound, that is, up to Chessed of Zeir Anpin. And after the priest has elevated that sacrifice to that place, which is Chessed, they do not prevent the High Priest from ascending to his place, which is Chokhmah, so that his sin may be atoned for.
And therefore another priest offers his sacrifice for him. And since another offers it and they are not so satisfied through him, for he can only elevate up to Chessed. At the same time, the aspect of the High Priest reaches up to Chokhmah — behold, afterward the High Priest himself offers, and then the upper beings all join together to atone for his sin. And the Holy King agrees with them.
Similarly, with one who prays and makes a mistake, another stands in his place.
Notes:
The Zohar reveals the precise kabbalistic hierarchy of the priesthood and its corresponding roots in the sefirot. The High Priest (Kohen Gadol / anointed priest) is rooted in Chokhmah, while ordinary priests and the deputy (segan) are rooted in Chessed.
When the High Priest sins, another priest must first offer his sacrifice and elevate it only to Chessed. Only afterward can the High Priest himself complete the offering and ascend to Chokhmah, where full atonement is achieved with the agreement of all upper realms. This process ensures that each level performs its proper function in accordance with its root.
The same principle applies to a prayer leader who errs: another must stand in his place. The teaching emphasizes the importance of spiritual fitness and proper alignment when one represents the community before the divine, as every action in the Temple or in prayer affects the upper worlds through their specific sefirot channels.
