Zohar Vayikra
Continued from previous DZ
#325
Come and see: On that day when Adam was born, they were commanded concerning one tree — which is the Tree of Knowledge — and they transgressed the commandment of their Master. And because the woman sinned first, and that serpent came upon her, it is written: “וְהוּא יִמְשָׁל בָּךְ” “and he shall rule over you” (Genesis 3:16). From here onward, whenever the men are found guilty before the Holy One, blessed be He, we have established that these women — who are from the side of harsh judgment — are destined to rule over them from the side of harsh judgment. This is what is written: “עַמִּי נֹגְשָׂיו מְעוֹלֵל וְנָשִׁים מָשְׁלוּ בוֹ” “My people — children are their oppressors, and women rule over them” (Isaiah 3:12). “Women rule over them” — certainly.
#326
And these women are called “חֶרֶב הַמִּתְהַפֶּכֶת” “the flame of the turning sword,” and not that they themselves are the turning sword, but they are the flame of this sword which is called “חֶרֶב נֹקֶמֶת נְקַם בְּרִית” “a sword that avenges the vengeance of the covenant.” “חֶרֶב לַה’ מָלְאָה דָם” “A sword of YHVH full of blood” (Isaiah 34:6). And the flame of that sword turns — sometimes it is males and sometimes females. And we have already established this.
Notes:
The Zohar links the primordial sin in the Garden of Eden to ongoing gender dynamics. Because Eve sinned first and was seduced by the serpent, the decree “he shall rule over you” was issued. When men fail spiritually and become guilty before God, women — who embody the aspect of harsh judgment — are empowered to rule over them as a form of divine correction. The verse “women rule over them” is understood literally in this context as a manifestation of judgment.
These ruling women are mystically identified with “the flame of the turning sword” that guards the way to the Tree of Life. They are not the sword itself (which is the avenging sword of the covenant), but its flaming, turning aspect — a force of judgment that can manifest through either males or females. This teaching reveals how societal power shifts between genders often reflect deeper spiritual imbalances and the activation of judgment when holiness is lacking.
