Come and see: among these evil kinds, there are three levels, one above the other. The upper level among them are those that hang in the air, who hear what is decreed above, but they do not come into this world. The lower level of them are those that mock people and cause them pain in a dream, because they are all arrogant like dogs. And there is an upper level above them, that is the middle one, which are from the upper ones and the lower ones, and they hear matters from the upper ones, that is from those that hang in the air, and they make known the matters to a person in a dream — some of them false and some of them true. And these true matters are what will all be in a near time.
Notes:
There are three levels among the impure forces that affect dreams. The highest hear decrees but do not enter this world—the lowest mock and torment people in dreams. The middle level receives information from the higher impure forces and conveys mixed true-and-false messages about near events.

And that level of those that hang in the air, which are more upper, when one has merited only a nefesh, and that nefesh wants to be fixed to receive a ruach, and before he has merited a ruach, then at night at the time of sleep, that which goes out from that nefesh goes out and spreads in the world. That is, not all of the nefesh leaves the person during his sleep, but a part of it, for a measure of life-force remains of it. And it wants and does not want to ascend above among the angels, until it meets these shells that are in the air, as above, and they make known to it matters — some of them that will come in a near time, and some of them that will come in a more distant time. And at that level, those that hang in the air go and become bound in their dream, until they acquire a ruach.
Notes:
Before a person rises from nefesh to ruach, part of the nefesh leaves during sleep and encounters the higher impure forces that hang in the air. These forces give it mixed information about near and distant events. Through this process, the nefesh gradually becomes prepared to receive a ruach.
