#197
And this is what Rabbi Shimon said: Every person whose eye is evil, the eye of the destroyer(המשחית) rests upon him, and he is called the destroyer of the world. And a person needs to guard himself from him, so that he will not draw near to him and be harmed. And it is forbidden to draw near to him openly. That is, that he will be revealed to his evil eye. And because of this, if from a person of an evil eye one needs to guard oneself, from the Angel of Death how much more so does one need to guard oneself from him. And one needs to hide on the day of the anger of YHVH.
Notes:
One whose eye is evil has the destroyer’s eye resting upon him, and he is called the destroyer of the world. A person must guard himself so as not to be seen by that evil eye. If one must hide from a person of an evil eye, how much more from the Angel of Death, and one must hide on the day of the anger of YHVH.

What is written of Balaam? “וּנְאֻם הַגֶּבֶר שְׁתֻם הָעָיִן” “And the saying of the man whose eye is closed” (Numbers 24:3). For he had an evil eye, and in every place that he looked at it, he would draw upon it the spirit of the destroyer. And because of this he wanted to look at Israel, so that he would destroy in every place that his eye would look. What is written? “וַיִּשָּׂא בִלְעָם אֶת עֵינָיו” “And Balaam lifted his eyes” (Numbers 24:2), that he raised one eye and lowered one eye, in order to look at Israel with the evil eye.
The meaning: The doubled limbs, the eyes and the ears and so on, come from joining the attribute of judgment with the attribute of mercy, that is, Malchut in Binah. And the right limb is mainly from the attribute of mercy from Binah, and the left limb is mainly the attribute of judgment from Malchut of the first contraction. It is also known that if a person merits, the attribute of judgment is found hidden and concealed, and the attribute of mercy is revealed and it acts everything. If he does not merit, the attribute of judgment is revealed upon him, and he loses everything, for when the wicked increase in the world, the destroyer is permitted to reveal the attribute of judgment and punish the world. Therefore even the righteous needs to fear him, for all his power is because the attribute of judgment is concealed and hidden and does not act toward the righteous. Therefore the destroyer can reveal the attribute of judgment that is in him and punish him together with the wicked. And this is the secret of what it says here of Balaam, that is, with his evil eye he would reveal the hidden attribute of judgment, as above. And this is what it says: that it is the left eye of the attribute of judgment, that he nullified the power of his right eye, where the attribute of mercy is, in order to look at Israel with the evil eye, that is with his left eye, which is the attribute of judgment.
Notes:
Balaam had an evil eye, the left eye of judgment. By raising one eye and lowering the other, he sought to look at Israel with that evil eye and draw the destroyer upon them. When the wicked increase, the destroyer can reveal hidden judgment even on the righteous; therefore, one must hide from him.
