Zohar Vayikra
Continued from previous DZ
#255
We have learned: When the evil inclination prevails in a person, it prevails only in matters of sexual immorality (עֲרָיוֹת). And all sins are attached to that nakedness. And it is written: “לֹא תְגַלֵּה” “you shall not uncover.” And when it is rectified, it is rectified corresponding to that which was uncovered, and this is called teshuvah.
#256
Rabbi Yitzchak said: All the sins of the world are attached to this — to the uncovering of nakedness (בגילוי ערוה) — until Ima, which is Malchut, is revealed because of the sins; that is, her nakedness is revealed. And when she is revealed, all these sons — that is, Israel below, who are the sons of Malchut — are revealed. And it is written: “לֹא תִקַּח הָאֵם עַל הַבָּנִים” “You shall not take the mother with the young” (Deuteronomy 22:6).
And when the world below is rectified, everything is rectified, until the rectification ascends to the holy Mother, which is Malchut. She is rectified and covered from what was revealed. And because of this, it is written: “אַשְׁרֵי נְשׂוּי פֶשַׁע כְּסוּי חֲטָאָה” “Fortunate is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered” (Psalms 32:1). And then it is called teshuvah — teshuvah certainly. And then it is called Yom HaKippurim, as it is written: “מִכֹּל חַטֹּאתֵיכֶם לִפְנֵי יְהוָה תִּטְהָרוּ” “From all your sins before YHVH you shall be purified” (Leviticus 16:30).
Notes:
The evil inclination primarily overpowers a person through sexual immorality (עֲרָיוֹת), and all other sins are rooted in this “uncovering of nakedness.” When a person sins in this area, Malchut (Ima, the Mother of Israel) is exposed and revealed in her vulnerable state. This exposure affects all her “sons” — the souls of Israel below.
True teshuvah repairs exactly what was damaged: it covers and rectifies the nakedness of Malchut, allowing her to return to her concealed and honored state. Only then is the rectification complete, ascending from below to Malchut. This process is called complete teshuvah and is the inner essence of Yom HaKippurim — the day when all sins are covered, and the world is purified before YHVH. The verse “Fortunate is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered” beautifully expresses this covering and restoration of Malchut through repentance.
