Zohar Vayishlach
Genesis 32:7
“The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and furthermore he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.””
The Zohar says that “to your brother” is normally enough, because Jacob had only one brother but they added “Esau” to tell him that his brother didn’t change and he is still the wicked Esau as before. They added that he is not coming with good intention to meet him because he had four hundred men with him.

They told him all that because the Holy One Blessed be He always wants the prayers of the Tzadikim. The angel that is appointed on the prayers is called סנדלפון (this name should not be spoken). He takes the prayers and create a special crowns for Holy One Blessed be He.
Jacob was with camps of angels (32:2,3) and still had fear. The Zohar says that Tzadikim don’t count on their merits and keep praying to God for protection.
Lesson: We earn merits for every good did. These merits accumulate in a special account for the world to come and the Resurrection. Tzadikim keep their merits for that time.
If we ask God to grant us a special wish because we did good, we may receive it but the merits will be removed from our accounts or marked as ‘rewarded’. If we put ourselves in danger then merits from our ‘merit account’ are used to protect our lives.
On Yom Kippur we ask for gifts from the ‘treasure of free gifts’. This treasure of God managed by the grace of God and gifts are given sometimes even to those who are not worthy of gifts may be because they may do good in the future.
It’s better to ask for a free gift from God rather than use our merits as a currency for rewards in this temporary world.
