85. רַבִּי חִיָּיא וְרַבִּי חִזְקִיָּה הָיוּ יוֹשְׁבִים תַּחַת הָאִילָנוֹת שֶׁל שְׂדֵה אוֹנוֹ. נִרְדַּם רַבִּי חִיָּיא, וְרָאָה אֶת אֵלִיָּהוּ. אָמַר, מֵהוֹכָחַת הַדֶּרֶךְ שֶׁל מַר מֵאִיר הַשָּׂדֶה. אָמַר, כָּעֵת בָּאתִי לְהוֹדִיעַ שֶׁקְּרוֹבָה יְרוּשָׁלַיִם לְהֵחָרֵב, וְכָל אוֹתָן קִרְיוֹת הַחֲכָמִים, מִשּׁוּם שֶׁיְּרוּשָׁלַיִם הִיא דִין, וְעַל דִּין עוֹמֶדֶת וְעַל דִּין תֵּחָרֵב, וְהִנֵּה נִתְּנָה רְשׁוּת לְסמא”ל עָלֶיהָ וְעַל גִּבּוֹרֵי הָעוֹלָם, וּבָאתִי לְהוֹדִיעַ לַחֲכָמִים אוּלַי יַאֲרִיכוּ אֶת שְׁנוֹת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, שֶׁהֲרֵי כָּל זְמַן שֶׁנִּמְצֵאת בָּהּ תּוֹרָה – הִיא עוֹמֶדֶת, מִשּׁוּם שֶׁהַתּוֹרָה עֵץ הַחַיִּים הָעוֹמֵד עָלֶיהָ. כָּל זְמַן שֶׁהַתּוֹרָה מִתְעוֹרֶרֶת לְמַטָּה – עֵץ הַחַיִּים לֹא זָז לְמַעְלָה. פָּסְקָה הַתּוֹרָה לְמַטָּה – עֵץ הַחַיִּים מִסְתַּלֵּק [מִמֶּנָּה] מִן הָעוֹלָם.
“וַיִּירָא וַיֹּאמַר מַה נּוֹרָא הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה אֵין זֶה כִּי אִם בֵּית אֱלֹהִים וְזֶה שַׁעַר הַשָּׁמָיִם.”
“וַיַּשְׁכֵּם יַעֲקֹב בַּבֹּקֶר וַיִּקַּח אֶת הָאֶבֶן אֲשֶׁר שָׂם מְרַאֲשֹׁתָיו וַיָּשֶׂם אֹתָהּ מַצֵּבָה וַיִּצֹק שֶׁמֶן עַל רֹאשָׁהּ.”
“And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.””
“So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar (מַצֵּבָה) and poured oil on its top.”
Rabbi Elazar says that the Jubilee is the aspect of Israel Sava and Tevunah that are the lower seven sefirot of Binah. Even though judgments awakened from this level, in essence, it is all mercy and joy to all that come out of it. Rabbi Aba says that the female is called ‘house of God (אלהים ELHYM)’ because it receives judgments from the jubilee. Rabbi Elazar disputes Rabbi Aba and says that the ‘house of God’ is on the Left, Gevurah of Zeir Anpin. The good aspect of the Left is awakened when there is a desire for unification. The bad of the Left is awakened with harsh judgments.
Rabbi Shimon says that the ‘House of God’ is Binah, which is the city of the Great King. Psalms 48:3
“יְפֵה נוֹף מְשׂוֹשׂ כָּל הָאָרֶץ הַר צִיּוֹן יַרְכְּתֵי צָפוֹן קִרְיַת מֶלֶךְ רָב.”
“Beautiful in elevation, The joy of the whole earth, Is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, The city of the great King.”
Below the upper three sefirot of Binah, we find Israel Sava and Tevunah. While Binah is the source of all good to the world, It has two aspects. The first is the ‘Mother’ that nourishes us all. When the Light is drawn from the Left of Binah, it brings judgments. When the Light is drawn from the Right of Binah then love is awakened for the unification.
Rabbi Chiyah and Rabbi Chiskiyah were sitting under the trees in the field of the city of Ono. Rabbi Chiya dozed and saw Elijah the prophet. He told the prophet that the field shines because of him.
“וַיהוָה הֹלֵךְ לִפְנֵיהֶם יוֹמָם בְּעַמּוּד עָנָן לַנְחֹתָם הַדֶּרֶךְ וְלַיְלָה בְּעַמּוּד אֵשׁ לְהָאִיר לָהֶם לָלֶכֶת יוֹמָם וָלָיְלָה.”
“And YHVH went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.”
Rabbi Chiyah intended to point to Elijah that he scolded the Israelites saying (1 Kings 18:24)
“וּקְרָאתֶם בְּשֵׁם אֱלֹהֵיכֶם וַאֲנִי אֶקְרָא בְשֵׁם יְהוָה וְהָיָה הָאֱלֹהִים אֲשֶׁר יַעֲנֶה בָאֵשׁ הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים וַיַּעַן כָּל הָעָם וַיֹּאמְרוּ טוֹב הַדָּבָר.”
“Then you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of YHVH; and the God who answers by fire, He is God.” So all the people answered and said, “It is well spoken.”
Then the people saw the miracle from God and said (1 Kings 18:39)
“וַיַּרְא כָּל הָעָם וַיִּפְּלוּ עַל פְּנֵיהֶם וַיֹּאמְרוּ יְהוָה הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים יְהוָה הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים.”
“Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “YHVH, He is God! YHVH, He is God!”
Elijah said that he came to announce that Jerusalem and all the cities of the wise men are about to be destroyed. Because Jerusalem is the Nukva, judgment, and it calls for its destruction, the angel Sam-el was given the permission to execute the judgment and now he, Elijah, comes to tell the wise people that they may try to act so Jerusalem won’t be destroyed. Because as long as the Torah is read and studied by the people below, it activates the Tree of Life to sustain Jerusalem on the spiritual level. If the people below stop the study of the Torah, the Tree of Life that is Zeir Anpin is disconnected from the world and judgments take over.
The Holy One Blessed be He reveals to the righteous before he inflicts judgment on the world. He gives them the opportunity to reveal greater light and lead the people to the Torah, so the judgment would be canceled or postponed to a later time, giving the people a path for correction and sweeten judgments.
