Zohar Balak

Numbers 24:2
“וַיִּשָּׂא בִלְעָם אֶת עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל שֹׁכֵן לִשְׁבָטָיו וַתְּהִי עָלָיו רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים.”
“And Balaam raised his eyes, and saw Israel encamped according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came upon him.”
#324
Balaam thought that he could remove the row of the tribe of Joseph and the tribe of Benjamin from existence with my evil eye. Rachel was there to protect her children. When she saw that Balaam’s eye focused on hurting them, she spread her wings and covered her children.
When Balaam’s eye saw the Holy Spirit, Malchut that is called Rachel. he pulled back because “the Spirit of God came upon him”. ‘Him’ refers to Israel that ‘spirit of God’ spread its wings above to protect Israel.

#325
We saw before (#322) that the son, Joseph, covered his mother with protection from the evil eyes of Esau, and here his mother protected him from the evil eye of Balaam.
At the time Joseph expanded his body to protect his mother, the Holy One Blessed be He promised him, saying, when another evil eye comes to look at your children and mine, your mother will shelter them as you sheltered your mother.

Lesson;
Every good action is registered in the heavens and rewarded at the proper time. Because of Joseph, the camps of Israel received protection from the evil eye of Balaam.
When we pray and ask for something from above, we better not mention our merits, small or big. If we ‘trade’ them, they are removed from our merit registry. We don’t mention our merits like “Please Hashem, grant me my wish because I did these good actions <…,...,...> “. Hashem may accept the trade even though he could grant us rewards from a source that doesn’t require a ‘trade’. Without a condition of trade, Hashem may pick a smaller item from the merit balance, much less that what a person offered. Therefore it is always better to be rewarded from the treasures of free gifts. Moses prayed 515 times, asking to enter the Holy Land with all the people of Israel. He didn’t trade any of his great merits. He wanted to draw from the treasure of free gifts, letting Hashem make the final decision. If our prayers are not answered, they are not ‘wasted’, but go into the treasures of free gifts where other prayers draw rewards from. Sooner or later the Holy One Blessed be He answers our prayers and rewards us from the treasures of free gifts.

Before meeting with Esau, Jacob pray for protection, saying Genesis 32:11 “קָטֹנְתִּי מִכֹּל הַחֲסָדִים וּמִכָּל הָאֱמֶת אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתָ אֶת עַבְדֶּךָ כִּי בְמַקְלִי עָבַרְתִּי אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן הַזֶּה וְעַתָּה הָיִיתִי לִשְׁנֵי מַחֲנוֹת.”
“I became smaller from all the Chassadim and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies.”
My translation is mostly literal to keep the true deeper meaning of the verse. Other translations try to make sense of the confusing words, and miss the true meaning.
Jacob assumed that the Chassadim that Hashem bestowed upon him were taken from his merit balance. Even though he is facing a great challenge, meeting with a brother that wishes to kill him. His prayer was simple and he didn’t mention any of his merits.

Friday would be a good day to make a ** Donation , especially if you didn’t donate in the past week. Giving on Friday, which is an aspect of Yessod, expands the vessel for the Light and honor of Shabbat.
** Your donation doesn’t have to be given to the same place every week. You can alternate or split your donation among those who benefit you spiritually.
