Tikkun 21 – 157

One of the illogical precepts in the Torah is found in Deuteronomy 22:6
“If a bird’s nest chance to be before you in the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, and the mother is sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young”
“You shall let the mother go, but the young you take to yourself; that it may be well with you and you will live longer.”

This precept is almost impossible to fulfill the way it is described in the Torah. The instructions tell us that IF we see a bird’s nest in front of us on our way, on the tree or on the ground and IF the mother is sitting on the eggs or on the chicks… send the mother away so you will have better and longer life…”

One of the deeper meaning and connection of this mitzvah is related to our work to reveal light in our lives and in the world. The nest is the aspect of Malchut and the eggs and chicks are the essence and beneficent of the light in the world.
The mother is the light of Binah, revealed through the study of Torah and Kabbalah, symbolized by the Tree, which is the Tree of Life.
The mother, Binah, can also be found on the ground, meaning by revealing its light in Malchut by our positive actions.

By acting with restriction, meaning ‘sending’ the mother, which is pushing away the light from us with actions of sharing, we reveal the light on the levels of potential (Eggs) and actual (Chicks).

It doesn’t matter if we see the fruits of our actions immediately, they can manifest sooner (‘well with you’) or later (‘prolong your life’).

The Zohar describes the connection between the different elements in these precepts to the Tree of Life.

The tree is for the central column, Tiferet and Yessod.
The Chicks are the two arms, Chessed and Gevurah.
The eggs are the legs, Netzach and Hod.
The sitting Mother is Binah
The mother that we send away is the aspect of the light on the level of Malchut.

We should never look at the Torah in a religious way and just follow the literal words without understanding the spiritual significance and the effect of our actions.

It is not smart to read the first chapter of the Torah and keep treating it as simple text and stories. The Torah begins with an unclear story of creation and two humans that came from one body talking to a snake. God said that they would die and they didn’t. (Read it with logical mind and you will quickly find a lot more than I mentioned here)

This teaches us that the consciousness and the deeper meaning of the Torah and the precepts are the important connections.
Simple action can satisfy a religious mind but to achieve a higher spiritual state we must know WHY we do the precepts.

Ask your rabbi the ‘WHY?’ questions on the precepts that come your way. If he doesn’t know then go to another and keep asking until you get the answers.
