Rabbi Elazar was going to see his father, and Rabbi Abba was with him. Rabbi Abba said, “Let’s say words of Torah and go.” Rabbi Elazar opened and said,
Genesis 12:13
“Please say you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you.”
This verse is difficult, for how could Abraham, who was God-fearing and beloved by the Holy One, Blessed be He, say such a thing about his wife so that they would treat him well? And he answers, even though Abraham was God-fearing, did not rely on his own merit, and did not want from the Holy One, Blessed be He, to diminish from his merit, but relied on the merit of his wife so that he would gain fortune on her account from other nations, for a man earns money by the merit of his wife. This is what is written,
Proverbs 19:14
“Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from YHVH.”
He who merits a prudent wife merits everything. And it is written,
Proverbs 31:11
“The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.”
