#182
Abraham followed in her merit to partake of the goods of other nations; that is, “he will have no lack of gain.” (#181). He relied on her merit so that they would not be able to harm her or take advantage of her. And for this reason, he gave them nothing by saying, “She is my sister.” Not only that, but he saw an angel walking before her and said to Abraham, “Do not fear for her. For the Holy One, Blessed be He, has sent me to extract other nations’ wealth and protect her from everything.” Then Abraham was not afraid for his wife but for himself because he did not see the angel with him, but with his wife. He said, “Indeed, she is protected, and I am not protected,” for this reason, he said, “Please say you are my sister, etc.”

#183
Asking, “They should deal well with me” (#181) was what he needed to say. For it is written,
Genesis 12:12
“And when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live.”
Therefore, “They should deal well with me” was what he needed to say. And he answers, instead, “May it go well for me because of the one who walks before you,” that is, the angel. “May the Holy One, Blessed be He, grant me well-being in this world with wealth. And may my soul live in the next world. Because of you,” meaning that you should not deviate from the path of truth, for if I merit wealth in this world because of you, and you deviate from the path, then death is prepared for me in the next world. Instead, you should keep the path so my soul may live in the next world because of you.
