Zohar Acharei Mot

#319
And the Holy One, Blessed be He, praises the Congregation of Israel as a “שושנה” Shoshana (rose/lily). And we have already established why He praises her with the Shoshana, as we have learned. Rabbi Yehuda said: at the time when the righteous increase in the world, the Congregation of Israel, which is the Malchut, emits a sweet fragrance, which is the secret of the light of Chochmah that shines from below upward, like a fragrance, and she is blessed with chassadim from the Holy King (Zeir Anpin), and her face glows. But at the time when the wicked increased in the world, the Congregation of Israel, so to speak, did not emit a sweet fragrance and instead tasted of the bitter nourishment from the Sitra Achra. Then it is written: “הִשְׁלִיךְ מִשָּׁמַיִם אֶרֶץ” “He has cast down from heaven to earth…” (Lamentations 2:1)—meaning, the union between Zeir Anpin (called heaven) and Malchut (called earth) is nullified, and her face darkens (וּפָנֶיהָ חֲשׁוּכִים).

Rabbi Yossi said: at the time when the righteous increase in the world, it is written: “שְׂמֹאלוֹ תַּחַת לְרֹאשִׁי וִימִינוֹ תְּחַבְּקֵנִי” “His left hand is under my head, and His right-hand embraces me” (Songs 2:6)—meaning that left and right, judgment and mercy, are unified together in balance. But when the wicked increase in the world, it is written: “הֵשִׁיב אָחוֹר יְמִינוֹ” “He has turned His right hand backward” (Lamentations 2:3)—meaning, the right side (Chessed, mercy) is withdrawn, and the left side (Gevurah, judgment) rules alone. All harsh judgments are poured forth from that left side at that time. Rabbi Chizkiyah said: From here we understand the verse: “וְנִרְגָּן מַפְרִיד אַלּוּף” “A perverse man sows strife, And a whisperer separates best of friends” (Proverbs 16:28)—this refers to how the King becomes separated from the Queen, due to the presence of the wicked, who are likened to a whisperer (spreads strife).
Thus it is written: “עֶרְוַת אָבִיךָ וְעֶרְוַת אִמְּךָ לֹא תְגַלֵּה” “The nakedness of your father and the nakedness of your mother you shall not uncover” (Leviticus 18:7)—meaning: Do not cause the uncovering of judgments above, which leads to nourishment for the Sitra Achra, for through that, the holy union (zivug) is severed.
Notes:
This teaching emphasizes that The harmony between Divine mercy and judgment—represented by right and left hands, or the union of King and Queen—is sustained by the righteousness of the people. When sin or gossip-like behavior spreads, it causes Divine separation, Unleashed judgment, and nourishment to impure forces. The Torah warns against this spiritual disruption through laws of forbidden relationships—serving as metaphors for maintaining holiness and unity in all realms.
