#321
Rabbi Elazar was sitting before his father. He said to him: “If there is a good advocate in the world, he reaches only to the Queen (Malchut). And if there is an accuser in the world, he too reaches only to the Queen—but not above the level of the Queen.” And Rabbi Elazar asked: “Why is it so?” His father answered: “It is like a king with a son from the Queen. As long as the son fulfills the will of the king, the king places his dwelling with the Queen. But when the son fails to fulfill the king’s will, the king withdraws his dwelling from the Queen.”
#322
So it is with the Holy One, Blessed be He, and the Congregation of Israel: As long as Israel does the will of the Holy One, He places His dwelling within the Congregation of Israel. But whenever Israel does not fulfill His will, then the Holy One does not dwell within the Congregation of Israel. What is the reason? Because Israel is called His firstborn son, as it is written: “בְּנִי בְכֹרִי יִשְׂרָאֵל” “My son, My firstborn, Israel” (Exodus 4:22). And Congregation of Israel is their mother, as it is written: “וְאַל תִּטֹּשׁ תּוֹרַת אִמֶּךָ” “Do not forsake the Torah of your mother” (Proverbs 1:8).
Notes:
The Divine Presence (Shekhinah) dwells with Israel only when Israel lives in accordance with Hashem’s will. Israel is called God’s firstborn son, and Shekhinah is their mother—both roles carry a profound spiritual responsibility. When Israel fulfills the Torah, the King (Zeir Anpin) and Queen (Malchut) are united, and blessing flows. But that union is broken when they sin, and Hashem’s Presence withdraws.
