Ketoret = קטורת = Incense
Nadav and Avihu were righteous with very high souls. They brought Ketoret into the Holy Tabernacle expecting to make a connection that would open a flow of Light to the world and bring Mashiach to complete the tikun of the world. Unfortunately, they were not ready and made few mistakes that brought death on them.
In this portion God gives instructions to Moses to teach Aaron and his sons on how to do the services in the Holy Tabernacle and make proper and safe connections.
Song of Songs 1:3
“לְרֵיחַ שְׁמָנֶיךָ טוֹבִים שֶׁמֶן תּוּרַק שְׁמֶךָ עַל כֵּן עֲלָמוֹת אֲהֵבוּךָ”
“Your oils have a pleasing fragrance, Your name is like purified oil; Therefore the maidens love you.”
The sense of smell is purer than any of the other senses because it wasn’t connected to the sin of Adam. The oil is the aspect of Chassadim and the ‘fragrance’ is the aspect of the Light of Chokmah that ascends up from Malchut to the Chassadim of Zeir Anpin and revealed in the worlds.
The Zohar tells us to read the word עלמות, ‘maidens’ as ‘עולמות’ ‘worlds’ because they have the same letters. Ketoret means ‘link’ , ‘knot’, ‘connection’. When the Ketoret establishes a connection between Malchut and Zeir Anpin, the Light of Chokmah is revealed as Chassadim and comes down to Malchut nourishing all the worlds on the way down.
The Ketoret that burnt in the Holy Temple raised up to heaven as a straight column even when the weather was windy or rainy. This miracle tells us that the Ketoret made a connection with very high spiritual level.
The connection of our souls should be straight to God without attachment of material things.
The next two studies touches a little on the aspects of our spiritual connections.
