“Seven complete Shabbatot” refers to the seven Sefirot of Malchut, which is called Shabbat. When these seven are complete and perfected, they are expressed through the seventy letters of the Divine Name of 72 ( שם ע״ב). The main body of this Name is composed of 70 letters, and the two additional letters correspond to witnesses or scribes, as explained earlier (in Beshalach, #163). It further explains that the Name of 72 arises (formed) through the letter Vav (ו), which represents Zeir Anpin (Z “A), specifically through its Chessed, Gevurah, and Tiferet (its upper triad, or חג” ת). These are encoded in the verses in Parashat Beshalach — specifically, the words “Vayisa” (ויסע), “Vayavo” (ויבא), “Vayet” (ויט) (Exodus 14:19–21) which together form the 72 Triplets. And when the Shechinah receives from Z “A, and seven markings (sefirot) are impressed upon her from him — that is, the seven complete Sefirot — then from her ascend seventy engraved letters, which correspond to the Name of 72.
We have learned that these letters of the Name of 72 are elevated into known inscriptions and hidden paths, which are only revealed to the true righteous — the pillars of the world.
Notes:
The seven complete Sefirot of Malchut, known as Seven Shabbatot, are perfected through their union with Zeir Anpin and expressed via the Name of 72. These seventy letters, along with two representing scribes or witnesses, form a spiritual bridge of supernal illumination. This Name and its functions are hidden and only truly accessible to Tzaddikim, the righteous who serve as the pillars of the world. This teaching links Malchut’s secret ascent with the Holy Names’ deepest mysteries and spiritual restoration.

Rabbi Shimon said to Rabbi Elazar: Come and see, these twenty-two engraved letters of the Torah are all clarified within the Ten Utterances, which are the ten sefirot — Keter, Chochmah, Binah, Chessed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach, Hod, Yessod, and Malchut. Each utterance among these ten, which are the sefirot of the King, is engraved with known letters — for the letters are the vessels of the sefirot, and each sefira has its specific vessels.
Because of this, the sacred Name YHVH is covered with other letters — that is, by the Name ADNY (Adnut). The vessels of Zeir Anpin, which is the secret of the Name, are dressed and concealed in the vessels of Malchut, which is Adnut. Each utterance borrows letters from the utterance above it because all are included within one another. Therefore, we pronounce the sacred Name YHVH using other letters — ADNY— because they are concealed and clothed one within the other until all are bound together as one.
Notes:
The Zohar explains that the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet are spiritual vessels that express the ten sefirot. These sefirot manifest through the Ten Utterances of Creation, each encoded with specific letters. The sacred Name, YHVH, representing the higher light, is cloaked in the letters ADNY, reflecting the descent of the upper light into the world through the vessel of Malchut. This concealment and clothing of names explain why we pronounce YHVH as Adonai. All these names and utterances are interconnected, revealing the deep unity and structure of Divine revelation.
