Daily Zohar # 5176 – Vayikra – I will give thanks to You forever, for You have done it
Daily Zohar 5176

Zohar Vayikra
Continued from previous DZ
#354
They sat inside that cave all that day. When the night darkened, the moon illuminated the cave. Two merchants passed by, and their donkeys were loaded with wine and food for themselves. They rested from their burden. They said to one another: Let us lodge here. Let us give food and drink to the donkeys, and we will enter this cave. One said to his companion: Before we enter, tell me this verse that does not settle well with me.
#355
He said to him, “What is it?” He said to him: One word, as it is written: “אוֹדְךָ לְעוֹלָם כִּי עָשִׂיתָ” etc. “I will give thanks to You forever, for You have done it” etc. (Psalms 52:11). What is “for You have done it,” and it is not written, “what He has done”? And it is written: “כִּי טוֹב נֶגֶד חֲסִידֶיךָ” “for it is good in the sight of Your pious ones” (Psalms 52:11). And is it not good for others? Is not the Holy One, blessed be He, good to all? He had no answer. He said: Woe to our merchandise, that we abandoned the Holy One, blessed be He, for its sake.
Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yosi, who were sitting in the cave and hearing their words, rejoiced. Rabbi Chiya said to Rabbi Yosi: Did I not tell you, when the Holy One, blessed be He, performs a miracle, He does it completely. They came out of the cave to the merchants.
Notes:
While hiding in the cave, Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yosi overhear two merchants discussing a difficult verse from Psalms 52. The merchants struggle with why the verse says “for You have done it” without specifying the act, and why it emphasizes goodness “in the sight of Your pious ones” when God is good to all. Their sincere reflection leads them to regret prioritizing business over Torah study.
The sages rejoice at this unexpected spiritual awakening, seeing it as part of the complete divine miracle protecting them. The story beautifully illustrates how God’s miracles often include hidden spiritual rectifications and opportunities for others to draw closer to Him, even in the midst of danger. It reinforces the theme that the tzaddikim’s merit and Torah study bring blessing and awakening to those around them.
