Zohar Vayikra
Continued from previous DZ
#384
Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yosi blessed them, kissed them on their heads, and sent them on their way. Rabbi Chiya said to Rabbi Yosi: Blessed is the Merciful One who prepared this path before us. Certainly, the Holy One, blessed be He, sent them to us. Fortunate are those who occupy themselves with Torah and do not slacken from it even for one hour. Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yosi came out of the cave and went on their way. Rabbi Yosi said: Certainly, the love of my heart is bound to these merchants. Rabbi Chiya said: I am not surprised at this, for in the days of Rabbi Shimon, even the birds of the sky utter wisdom, for his words are heard above and below.
Notes:
As dawn breaks (“the morning was light”), the dinim pass away, Chessed awakens, and Yessod (the “morning”) channels light and blessing to Malchut (the “night”). The merchants share profound insights on these verses, showing their sincere love for Torah.
The sages bless the merchants, kiss them, and recognize them as a divine gift sent for their protection and elevation. Rabbi Yosi expresses deep affection for them, and Rabbi Chiya notes that in Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai’s generation, even simple people and birds utter wisdom. The entire episode demonstrates how divine providence arranges encounters between merchants seeking truth and sages who can provide mystical insight, turning a moment of danger into one of spiritual elevation.
#385
Rabbi Chiya opened and said: “וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל מֹשֶׁה הִנְּךָ שֹׁכֵב עִם אֲבֹתֶיךָ” etc. “And YHVH said to Moshe: Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers” etc. (Deuteronomy 31:16).
Come and see: All the time that Moshe was alive in the world, he would protest against the hands of Israel so that they would not be found in sin before the Holy One, blessed be He. And because Moshe was found among them, there will not be a generation like that generation until the generation that will come with King Mashiach, who will see the glory of the Holy One, blessed be He, like them, for they attained what other generations did not attain.
Notes:
The Zohar highlights the unparalleled spiritual stature of the generation of Moshe. As long as Moshe lived among them, he constantly interceded and protected Israel from the full consequences of their sins. His presence elevated the entire generation to a level of divine closeness and revelation that no other generation has matched.
The announcement of Moshe’s impending death marks the end of this exceptional era. The Zohar looks forward to the generation of Mashiach, which will once again attain such heights of divine glory and direct revelation. This teaches the tremendous protective and elevating power of a true leader like Moshe, and the hope that the final redemption will restore such a direct connection for Israel.
