381. וְעַל זֶה אָמַר רַבִּי יְהוּדָה, יִשְׂרָאֵל נִקְרָאִים אַחִים לַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, שֶׁלֹּא סָרָה אַהֲבָתָם לְעוֹלָמִים. יְרוּשָׁלַיִם שֶׁלְּמַטָּה נִקְרֵאת אֲחוֹת אִמֶּךָ, כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב (תהלים קכב) יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הַבְּנוּיָה כְּעִיר שֶׁחֻבְּרָה לָּהּ יַחְדָּו וְגוֹ’. מַה זֶּה שֶׁחֻבְּרָה לָּהּ יַחְדָּו? כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּזְדַּוֵּג עִמָּהּ הַמֶּלֶךְ מִשִּׁשָּׁה צְדָדִים, בְּכָל צִדְדֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ, בְּדַרְגַּת הַצַּדִּיק, וְכָל כִּתְרֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ שֶׁכְּלוּלִים בּוֹ. וְהַיְנוּ שֶׁחֻבְּרָה לָּהּ יַחְדָּו.
382. רַבִּי יִצְחָק אָמַר, שֶׁשָּׁם עָלוּ שְׁבָטִים שִׁבְטֵי יָהּ. מִי הַשְּׁבָטִים? אֵלּוּ שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר תְּחוּמִים שֶׁנִּפְרָדִים מֵאוֹתוֹ אִילָן גָּדוֹל וְחָזָק שֶׁיָּרַשׁ אוֹתָם מִצַּד הָאָב וְהָאֵם. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב שִׁבְטֵי יָהּ, מִיפִי הָעֵדוּת שֶׁמֵּעִיד הַבֵּן הַקָּדוֹשׁ, (שֶׁמֵּעִיד אַבָּא וְאִמָּא בַּבֵּן הַקָּדוֹשׁ) שֶׁכָּתוּב שִׁבְטֵי יָהּ עֵדוּת לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, וְהֵם נְהָרוֹת עֲמֻקִּים שֶׁשּׁוֹפְעִים וְנִמְשָׁכִים מִן יָ”הּ. וְהַכֹּל (וְכָל כָּךְ לָמָּה?) לְהוֹדוֹת לְשֵׁם ה’. כִּי שָׁמָּה יָשְׁבוּ כִסְאוֹת לְמִשְׁפָּט כִּסְאוֹת לְבֵית דָּוִד, לָרֶשֶׁת אֶת הַמַּלְכוּת הַקְּדוֹשָׁה הוּא וּבָנָיו לְדוֹרֵי דוֹרוֹת, וְזוֹהִי הַשִּׁירָה שֶׁאָמַר דָּוִד עַל הַמַּלְכוּת הָעֶלְיוֹנָה הַקְּדוֹשָׁה.

On this path, Rabbi Yehuda said: (Continuing the explanation from above, in #371:) Israel are called “brothers” to the Holy One, Blessed be He because His love for them is never interrupted. And Jerusalem below is called “the sister of your mother” (as mentioned in #377), as it is written: “יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הַבְּנוּיָה כְּעִיר שֶׁחֻבְּרָה לָּהּ יַחְדָּו” “Jerusalem, built as a city that is joined together” (Psalms 122:3). That is — Jerusalem below is like a city that is joined together with Jerusalem above, which is Malchut. What does “joined together” mean? It means that the King (Zeir Anpin) unites with her (the Shechinah, Malchut) through His six directions, meaning His six sefirot — Chessed through Yessod. This is especially true through the level of “the Righteous One” (Tzaddik), which is the Yessod because all the attributes of the King are included in it.
That is the meaning of “joined together” — the connection of all the sefirot of Zeir Anpin into one unified flow into Malchut.
Notes:
Jerusalem is described as a city of spiritual unification, where Zeir Anpin unites with Malchut through the channel of Yessod, enabling the flow of Light into the world. Just as Israel remains forever beloved, Jerusalem too is eternally bound with the upper worlds — and her full rectification happens when the King (Z”A), with all his spiritual powers, is united with her in harmony.
This teaches us that Divine unity above is reflected in our spiritual connection below — and that unity between Israel and the Shechinah is the key to activating blessing and Divine presence in the world.

Rabbi Yitzchak said: It is written: “שֶׁשָּׁם עָלוּ שְׁבָטִים שִׁבְטֵי יָהּ” “For there the tribes ascended — the tribes of Yah (יה)” (Psalms 122:4). Who are these “tribes”? He answers: These are the twelve boundaries that are specified from that great and mighty Tree, which is Zeir Anpin — That is: four sefirot — Chessed, Gevurah, Tiferet, and Malchut, and in each of them are three lines (right, left, and center), making a total of twelve boundaries. From Zeir Anpin, these twelve boundaries flow downward to Malchut, where they are called the Twelve Tribes. He inherited them from Abba and Imma (Father and Mother) — that is, from Chochmah and Binah. This is what is meant by “the tribes of Yah” (שבטי יה) — that is, from the goodness and testimony (עדות) that the holy Son (Zeir Anpin) receives. As it is written: “The tribes of Yah — a testimony to Israel.” Because these twelve boundaries are a testimony — namely, they shine with the Light of Eden, which is Chochmah, and they are deep rivers that flow from Yah (יה) — that is, from Abba and Imma. And all of this is in order to give thanks to the Name of Hashem. And therefore, it is written: “For there were set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David”— to establish the holy Malchut for him (David) and for his sons for all generations. And this is the song that David sang about the upper, holy Malchut.
Notes:
The twelve tribes of Israel represent deep spiritual roots in the sefirot—they are twelve channels of Light emerging from Zeir Anpin and descending into Malchut. This structure is inherited from Chochmah and Binah (Yah), forming the spiritual infrastructure for Israel, Jerusalem, and David’s kingship.
David’s song in Psalms is not only poetic — it is a deep celebration of the unity between upper and lower sefirot.
