Exodus 23:17
“שָׁלֹשׁ פְּעָמִים, בַּשָּׁנָה–יֵרָאֶה, כָּל-זְכוּרְךָ, אֶל-פְּנֵי, הָאָדֹן יְהוָה”
“Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord YHVH.”
This is the source of the precept of making pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The three times are Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot. These holidays represent the three columns of the Tree of Life. Connecting to the source of light in Jerusalem benefits us.
You can find some good info on the Internet about this but most of them do not explain the Kabbalistic aspect that is related to the connection to the three columns.
The holiday of Sukkot that we are celebrating now (until this Wednesday October 19th, 2011) is the aspect of the central column. The light of Chessed is radiating from Jerusalem, the place of the Holy temple.
I provide a link here to a live cam of the western wall in Jerusalem so you can make a connection.
