#19
Then Mashiach is clothed in a garment of royalty called a purple robe (פּוּרְפִירָה), on which all those killed by the nations and idolaters are engraved and marked. And this purple robe of Mashiach rises to Binah above, engraved within the upper purple robe of the King, who is Zeir Anpin, clothing Binah. That is, those killed by idolaters in the purple robe of Mashiach are engraved in the upper purple robe, where those who suffer illnesses and pains are engraved. Both become Mayin Nukvin (מ” ן) for the upper union of Zeir Anpin and Nukva. And the upper light is drawn through them to this hall. And the Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to be clothed in that purple robe of Mashiach, to judge all the nations of the world, as it is written, “יָדִין בַּגּוֹיִם מָלֵא גְוִיּוֹת” “He will judge among the nations, filled with corpses…” (Psalms 110:6). This will be at the end of time. But before this, the order is that the purple robe of Mashiach is sweetened by its joining with the purple robe of the Holy One, blessed be He. Then both rise as Mayin Nukvin together, and an upper union is made upon them, and they draw their lights. Until Mashiach returns and descends from the place of the union, and comforts the souls, and lights and delights descend with him to delight in. And several angels and chariots descend with Mashiach, each one of them carrying a garment for all these souls of those killed by the nations of the world, idolaters. And there they delight all that time that Mashiach ascends and descends. The meaning is that they receive lights of Eden, which is the secret of Chochmah. And it is known that the shining of Chochmah is received only from below to above. And therefore it says that the souls delight, that is, they receive the shining of Chochmah only at the time that Mashiach ascends and descends, for then the shining is in a state from below to above. But after Mashiach has already descended, they cannot delight, for then they would need to draw Eden from above to below, and it is received only from below to above, as said. And here the second aspect in the hall of Tiferet is explained, that is the aspect of the lights of Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet in this hall.
Notes:
The purple robe in this passage is not a color. It is the garment of royalty in which the deaths of Israel are inscribed, raised, and turned into feminine waters (Mayin Nukvin) for the upper union.
The royal purple is the garment a King puts on when he is revealed as King. Here it has two levels.
The lower purple robe is the garment of Mashiach. In the fourth hall stand those who mourn Zion and Jerusalem, and those killed by the nations. Their souls are not left as a loss. They are engraved and marked in his robe. The robe is the record of their death, carried on the body of the redeemer. That is why the Zohar has Mashiach weep before he is clothed in it: he sees them, the princes of the seed of David hold him, and only then is the robe put on.
The upper purple robe belongs to the King, Zeir Anpin clothing Binah. In it are already engraved those of the third hall — the ones who bore illnesses and hard pains, the children who did not complete their days, and those who grieved over the destruction of the Temple. When the robe of Mashiach rises, the slain of the nations are engraved inside that upper robe. The two inscriptions stand together.
That joining is the sweetening. A death by the nations, left by itself, is a harsh mark. Joined to the upper robe, where suffering has already been received into Zeir Anpin, it is no longer only judgment. Both rise as Mayin Nukvin for the upper union of Zeir Anpin and Nukva (Malchut). The awakening from below is these very marks. Upon them the union is made, and the upper light is drawn down into this hall. The hall of Tiferet can hold the lights of Chessed, Gevurah, Tiferet only because the robe has risen and returned.
Until Mashiach comes back down from the place of the union, comforts the souls, and brings the lights and the delights with him. Angels and chariots descend with him, and in the hand of each is a garment for every soul of those killed by the nations. The private garment is the portion each soul receives from the royal robe.
They delight only while he ascends and descends. Eden here is the secret of Chochmah, and the shining of Chochmah is received only from below to above. As long as Mashiach is in the motion of rising and returning, the souls stand in that direction and can receive it. Once he has already descended and remains below, a drawing from above to below would not yield that Chochmah, so the delight stops.
The end of days is a different clothing. Then the Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to wear that same purple robe of Mashiach and judge the nations. “Filled with corpses” is the robe itself: the engraved slain are the fullness with which He comes to judgment. Before that, the order of this hall is not judgment. It is the sweetening of the lower robe in the upper robe, their rise as Mayin Nukvin, and the return of Mashiach with garments of light for the souls. That return is the second aspect of the hall of Tiferet — the lights of Chessed, Gevurah, Tiferet drawn into it.

In the inwardness of this hall, that is, in the inwardness of Chessed, Gevurah, Tiferet in the hall, these ten appointed princes stand on an upper level. They are Rabbi Akiva and his companions. And all of them rise in the ascent within the mirror of above, which is the secret of the shining mirror, and they shine in the radiance of the upper honor. And about them it is written, “עַיִן לֹא רָאָתָה אֱלֹהִים זוּלָתְךָ” “No eye has seen a God besides You” (Isaiah 64:3). And this is the third aspect, that is, the three upper ones of this hall.
Notes:
In the innermost of the hall of Tiferet stand Rabbi Akiva and his companions, the ten princes. They rise into the shining mirror and shine in the upper honor, in the aspect of the three upper ones of this hall.
